I also have a Sony Vaio VGN-AR630E. There is a known problem with the NVIDA 8400M GT video card. Mine has died and Sony said this card will be fixed even if out of waranty, Only problem is that this model of laptop will not be fixed. This was not an inexpensive laptop, but Sony won't correct the problem with the video card.

It sounds like the PC is starting up in Safe Mode, or VGA Mode.

there might be a problem with the GPU (graphics processor) on the motherboard.

you could try and boot proper into Safe mode, and reinstall the video card drivers.

if the coloured lines you refer to , are corruption to the display output, you might have to get the GPU or entire motherboard replaced, thats fine if it is under warrenty, but can leave you out of pocket if it is not.

video card reinstall is fairly easy.
goto Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager .

Expand Display Adapters. your's should show in here.
Righ Click it , select Update driver.

at this point, it would have been good to have the replacement drivers onhand.

the graphics card onboard is a : Sony VGP-UPR1 Display Adapter.

the driver package you most likely want to get is from:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNAR520E&upd_id=3895&os_id=28

extract the driver download, and point the Update wizard to the folder location.

reboot and test the changes. if it still gives problems, go back into Device Manager, and instead of update Driver, choose Uninstall.
Reboot. and Windows should automatically try and reinstall the GPU, requesting you to select the driver location.

How do I get missing Icons back on my PC screen

The higher the resolution, the more likely you will be able to see your icons.
From Microsoft.com:
1. Open Display in Control Panel. 2. On the Settings tab, under Screen resolution, drag the slider, and then click Apply. 3. When prompted to apply the settings, click OK. Your screen will turn black for a moment. 4. Once your screen resolution changes, you have 15 seconds to confirm the change. Click Yes to confirm the change; click No or do nothing to revert to your previous setting. Note
• To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display. • A higher screen resolution reduces the size of items on your screen and increases the relative space on your desktop • You can switch your screen resolution temporarily to 640 X 480 if you have games or other programs that are set to run at that resolution. To switch, right-click the game or program (on the desktop or on the Start menu), and then click Properties. Click the Compatibility tab, and then select the Run in 640x480 screen resolution check box. Your display reverts to its default resolution when you close the program. • Your monitor and video adapter determine how much you can change your screen resolution. You may not be able to increase the resolution above a certain level. • Changes to screen resolution affect all users that log on to the computer. • Only the recommended screen resolutions are listed. For additional settings, click the Advanced button on the Settings tab, click the Adapter tab, and then click List all Modes. Select the resolution, color level, and refresh rate you want.

My screen of computer is so big the contents are enlarged my kid has pressed some buttons pls help

Hi nayyarshelly,

I like to help you regarding your concern having big Icons on your desktop, you mentioned that your kid accidentally pressed something on the machine that made everything big, See steps below to changes the Icons or your systems desktop settings.

  • First the system should be turned ON and logged in to Windows, I am assuming that you have Windows7 on your computer.
  • On the keyboard Hold down the CTRL button while holding down the CTRL key on the mouse scroll, scroll backwards this should make things smaller again.
  • If the screen on the Internet is also big do the same thing while your Internet Explorer is open this should change the size of the text / pictures anything on the Internet explorer.
  • But if the above does a different function from what you are experiencing then I believe that you are experiencing some changes in the resolution of the screen if everything is Enlarged.
  • Click on Start then on the search bar type in display, a list will show look for Display then click on it to open up the Display window then click on Adjust resolution.
  • The resolution on your screen depends on how big the LCD screen is
  • On the Resolution page you can pretty much check each resolution on the list that will be better to you, then click on Apply lower right then OK to apply settings on this page.
I hope that this will be of help regarding your concern.

Have a nice day,

Desktop screen saver was not full screensize, so i set to maximum setting 200% and now the whole thing is too big and desktop icons way too big to work with, how can I get into system to reset or...

It sounds like you changed your desktop background resolution settings and not the screensaver. Right-click on your desktop on any clear area that doesnt have an icon and if this is WinXP select properties, or if Vista select personalize. Select the settings tab and you should see a screen resolution adjustment slider that will allow you to change your screen rsolution which intur affects the size of all your icons etc. Select the size that suits you. 1080 X 786 is a good place to start. You're probably set to 800 X 600 right now.

Toshiba Qosmio notebook screen is booting up in 4bit mode instead of 32 and has lines across the screen.

right click on the desktop>properties and you should be able to adjust them. Set the resolution at 800x600 first before you adjust the colour depth. Then you can adjust the resolution etc properly.

Everything is too big

Sounds like the screen resolution has been changed. Right click on the desktop goto Properties -> Settings and slide the Screen Resolution slider to 1024 x 768 then click on Apply. If that works you should see all your icons as you did before, The resolution can be adjusted higher if its more suitable for you. Most 17inch laptops work between 1024 x 768 and 1152 x 864. If that doesn't work let us know! :)

Task-bar & start-menu disappeared

Sounds as if the video card is going down. This is a common problem on these laptops. Have you checked Device Manager to see if the drivers are installed. Hit Win key and pause then select hardware and Device Manager. If nothing seems out of place there then I would most certainly suspect the video card. This is part of the motherboard and not replaceable.

As another check try connecting the laptop to an external monitor via the VGA connector at the back. The resolution problem should be resolved then.

Resolution automatically changed on startup

If your monitor is actually the Zenith 17" HDTV, the native resolution is 1366x768. You may be able to "force" this resolution using powerstrip. It is freeware and you can download it here.
