I recently encountered a similar problem, which was down to a failed component on the drive PCB. Does the SATA drive work on other systems. A good troubleshooting device to purchase is a SATA/USB adapter which allows you to power an external SATA device and connect it direct to a USB port.

How do i fix it?

Your hard drive is missing from the system. Or, just does not recognize it. The obvious - Remove any USB devices like drives and any media from disc player. Its trying to load, but can't find bootable hard drive, CD, or USB... Remove the hard drive and reseat (reconnect). Check BIOS by pressing an F key during boot. Look on the screen for correct Function key. Might be F2 key. Verify BIOS recognizes the drive. It must be listed! There is no going forward if it's not. Check boot order and make internal hard drive first. Save and restart.

Sir, i have an msi n1996 (vt8237r & km400 8237) mother board. My sata 160 gb hdd is not getting recognized in bios. Pl. help. (it is reported somewhare on the net that i have to enter into the...

I enabled SATA support on my BioStar M7VIZ-SATA MOBO (it is km400 and 8237r, like yours) by first installing the VIA SATA RAID drivers. At this point, Windows recognized the device controller but not the 120GB drive. The problem was that the system doesn't support "newer" SATA drives, so I installed a jumper on the disk drive to set it to "150" mode... SATA version 1 compatibility. After that, Windows immediately recognized the drive and mounted the filesystem.

I think it was a Western Digital drive. Other manufacturers have a different name for the same jumper. Also, I read that one type (Samsung?) can only be set to the old SATA standard by getting the drive running in a SATA 2 environment, then using a utility program to adjust the drive's microcode setting.

Good Luck to you.

I recently had a hard drive failure on my HP Pavilion a610n. I decided to replace the IDE drive with an SATA drive. However, the computer will not recognize the SATA drive. I have tried plugging the SATA...

I'm not sure you can insert your OS disk to istall or not, so the solution depends on your being able to do so. It seems to me there's a strong possibility that the BIOS cannot see the drive because that software had basic drivers to recognise the IDE Drive the computer came with.

So, you have to locate the SATA Driver which can be loaded during installation of the OS from either a boot cd or boot floppy. WIndows Setup gives you a chance at the beginning of setup if you watch the progress bar below to press F6 if you need to load a "Third Party or RAID driver" A little further along the setup will stop and prompt you for this driver and you'll need it ready with the exterior CD drive or floppy drive attached with the media in it to load.

It's quite possible this is what you're going to have to do. If this isn't the solution, please don't trash my rating with a thumbs down click. I'm trying to help without complete info.

Best Wishes

Does not recognize hard drive

1. try reseating it if that doesn't help you might have a hard-drive failure. the only way to be sure is trying a replacement drive (maybe you can borrow from someone or from another laptop - currently on laptops there are 2 types of hard drives IDE and SATA don't mix them up, they are not interchangable)

Acer T180 SATA controller/bios stopped recognizing my 250GB Hard Disk. Not able to load any OS on new Hard Drives.Bios recognize the IDE DVD/RW drive.

If it just happened without any changes then it's probably a failure of the controller. You should probably check the bios just to make sure it's turned on. Also make sure there aren't any cabling problems. Your motherboard may have two controllers, a primary and secondary. Try swapping to the other cable. It's also a good excuse to get a new motherboard and cpu. The prices are really low lately.

SATA 2 HDD

I think, one possible way is to manually force sata 2 (there is no such thing as sata 2) to sata 1 by using a jumper for the hard drive. For exact details, please consult the sticker on the hdd or contact the hdd manufacturer for firmware updates. And please report back, especially if it's a success. (Damn, the VT8237)

Wd800jd sata hard drive not recognized in bios on boot up

Hi, A couple of ideas: 1. There are 3 versions of this motherboard: Dragon Plus, V1.0 & V2.0, perhaps your BIOS needs an update to be able to recognize the new HD. This of course would require flashing; 2. There are two variations of a WD SATA hard drive: Serial ATA amd Serial ATA II; 3. Re Jumper settings: the eight-pin jumper block is only used to enable power management on the drive. There are no master/slave settings since there is only one drive per cable; 4. If you are fresh installing Windows on it, you need to press F6 when asked by the Windows Installer and follow on-screen instructions. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information.
