My laptop won't read any disks i put into it at all. i go into my computer and it isnt even showing anything in the drive. i have a dell with windows vista. i've never had a problem with it before. i've tried seeing if it is disabled and i checked the autoplay. when i go to 'device manager' it says: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) then it says to click 'check for solutions' and it will start the load screen but stop and nothing happens. i am a college student so i have alot of data on my computer and i rely on a lot of cd's for my studies. please tell me how o fix this.

Hi,

Looks like the registry is corrupted. To solve this problem, you'll have to delete the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters in the Registry. Please follow these steps carefully to rectify this error:

1) Click on the Start button and type regedit in the search box.

2) You will be asked to confirm your admin account. Just hit Next or Continue.

3) Now browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control \Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Be careful to select the correct folder

4) When you open the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} folder, you'll see several entries in the window on the right side

5) Right click on the LowerFilters and delete it. Do the same for Upperfilters.

6) These will be created again when you Restart the laptop.

7) Restart the laptop. When it restarts, your computer will recognise the disk-drive as a new device and will install it once again. Then your disk drive will read the CDs.

Hope this solves your problem. For more help and clarifications, please reply to this post.

Please accept and rate the solution if it helps you. Thanks

Go to Start button>Programs>Accessories>System tools, and do a system restore to a date before the problem happened for the first time. Better to few days before.

Why won't my dell laptop cannot read the primary internal harddrive?

First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1405 laptop computer. I recently noticed that when I inserted a music CD into the drive, that it would not play or even recognize it in the My Computer window. I can still play DVDs...

The Cd player my be dirty, you can get disks you put in there to clean them. Also sometimes the players are just picky and don't like certain CD's..... I'll build brand new PC's that only read some CD right from the start.

Make sure your disks are clean to, with no fingerprints.

HELLO, my cd/dvd drive on my latop(DELL INSPIRON 6400) wont read disks, i have checked the information on it by clicking properties and its ays it 'working correctly' but it obviously isnt, i would REALLY...

As you have cleaned the lens, there is not a lot else you can do. You have checked it as far as you can apart from, put a system disk in the drive and boot the computer. If it tries to boot from the disk then the DVD drive is OK and you have a driver issue.
Hope this helps

I have a dell inspiron 1318. whenever i turn the laptop on, there is a black screen with a "read disk error has occured" message...it keeps bringing me back to the same screen...what should i do?

Disk read error is indicative of a hard disk drive failure. If under warranty, call Dell for a replacement drive. If not you can buy drives at places like Newegg.com or EBay

The unit id defective - hardware fault. Your last hope is to remove the actual hard disk from within it, put it directly in a desktop and try to access it from there. If even now you can't then the hard disk is dead and everything on it is lost.

Cd drive doesnt read anything

If the drive is showing an error (or is missing) in device manager, do the following:

Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click O.K)
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.

Hope this helps

Dvd player problems

When you put the DVD in the player, are you snapping it onto the spindle? You have to do that with notebook PCs, but not with desktops.

Laptop dvd drive wont recognise.

Sounds like a bad cdrom drive. If it isnt even being picked up in the bios (cmos), then it'll never show in windows. If reseating the drive doesn't work, just replace it with a known good one. Unless there is damage to the plug inside, that should solve it.
