Question about Lionel Toys
My intermodal crane does not lift up or drop down. The motor is running in both directions. How do I remove the plastic box from the top of the crane to see what is going on? I see that there are 4 screws on the underside, do these need to be removed to gain acess? Or is it just a matter of prying off the top. Where are the tabs located to release the cover? What should I be looking for inside once I get a look at the mechanism

You have to remove the back bottom skirt from television in order to get to the screws for the front bottom panel. When the front bottom panel is removed there will be more screws visible, for front screen. After an afternoon of trying to get it apart, just to clean the mirror on ours, we finally got it.

The teardown information from rbrown67 was very accurate and easy to follow. It helped tremendously in tearing down my machine to replace the AC plug.

SOURCE: I have a Kenmore Wispertone
I just encountered the same problem on a Whispertone 116 last evening. If it is the construction same as mine, there are four flexible plastic retainers molded into the top cover in the gap between the pedal and the motor cover. These are on the hinged side of the pedal. All four retainers must be bent in toward the interior of the vacuum simultaneously to release the pedal. A screwdriver does not work very well for this. What worked for me were four metal bars about 3/8" wide X 1/8" thick X 1-1/2" long. The pieces I used were actually the snap-off ends of some hanging file rails I found in my basement. Insert the four bars at the four retainers. They should fit snugly as they must push the retainers past the hinged portion of the pedal. To remove the pedal, rotate the pedal up in the same direction as the spring is pushing and it should come free from the motor compartment cover at which point you can access the other two screws. I suspect Sears has a special tool with four tabs to perform this trick in the repair center. Good luck!

You have to take off the push nuts, but you will have to replace them.
The little tikes gearbox assembly can be purchased at this site http://www.shopjandl.com/
but if you just need the push nuts like I did you get them here http://www.shopjandl.com/0801-0226.html.
I had the same problem, so all I had to do has tighten up those screws and replace the push nuts.
Hope this helps
