Color ink problem

Solution one: Check the ink levels To allow for full use of the cartridges, some printers continue to print even after the cartridges are completely out of ink. Follow these steps to check the ink levels in the Toolbox . The Toolbox is part of the standard printer software. Depending on the version of Toolbox on your computer, the appearance of the Toolbox features might vary.
NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When an indicator shows low ink levels, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. Print quality deteriorates as cartridges run out of ink.
  1. Click Start (c01827528.gif ), click All Programs , click the HP folder, and then click the icon for your HP printer (c02053172.gif ). The printer software opens.
  2. In the printer software, double-click Estimated Ink Levels . The Toolbox opens.
  3. Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab to display the estimated ink level of each cartridge. Figure 1: Estimated ink level indicator c02752297.gif Image: Estimated ink level indicator.
  4. If the ink level indicators show that a cartridge is low or empty, replace the cartridge.
  5. Try printing again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Reset the printer Resetting the printer might clear the issues and allow the printer to function correctly again.
  1. Press the Power button (c01602202.gif ) to turn off the printer.
NOTE: Pressing the Power button might not turn off the printer. This might happen if the printer is in an error state. Continue with these steps regardless.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer. Figure 2: Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer c01869581.gif Image: Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer. Figure 3: Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer c01850063.gif Image: Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer.
  4. Wait 30 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the USB cable to the printer. Figure 4: Reconnect the USB cable to the printer c01868577.gif Image: Reconnect the USB cable to the printer.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the printer. Figure 5: Reconnect the power cord to the printer c01869582.gif Image: Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  7. Press the Power button (c01602202.gif ) to turn on the printer.
  8. Try printing again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Restart the computer Restarting your computer might resolve the issue.
  1. Save the latest changes to your files, and then close all your open programs.
  2. Click Start , and then click Shut Down . A dialog box opens.
  3. Select Restart . Most computers turn off, and then turn on again automatically.
NOTE: If a dialog box opens with a message that it is now ok to turn off the computer, press the power button on the computer to turn it off. Then press the power button again to turn it on. After a few minutes, the computer is ready to print again.
  4. Reopen the file that you want to print, and then try printing again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution four: Check for blank pages in the print preview If the printer prints all pages correctly, but it adds blank pages to the printout, check for blank pages in the print preview.
  1. In most programs, click File , and then click Print Preview . If the program you are using does not have this option, consult the program manufacturer.
  2. Review the print preview for blank pages.
  • If the print preview reveals blank pages, delete the blank pages in the document, and then try printing again.
  • If the preview contains no blank pages, continue with the next solution.
Solution five: Check the USB cable If the printer connects with a USB cable, a faulty connection might cause the issue. Follow these instructions to check the USB cable.
  1. Make sure that the USB cable inserts all the way into its port on the rear of the printer. Use some pressure to push it in all the way. Figure 6: Insert a USB cable into the rear of the printer c01868577.gif Image: Insert a USB cable into the rear of the printer.
  2. Make sure that the USB cable inserts all the way into its port on the computer. Use some pressure to push it in all the way.
  3. If the issue persists, try replacing the USB cable with a known good cable.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution six: Check the printer settings on the computer Issues with the printer settings on the computer might cause the printer to print blank pages. Follow these steps to check the printer settings on the computer. Step one: Check the default paper settings Make sure that the default paper size matches the width and length of the paper loaded in the tray. If the paper loaded in the tray is different from the paper size setting, the printer might print blank pages. For instance, the issue might occur if legal size paper (215 x 355 mm (8.5 x 14 in)) is in the tray, and the paper size setting is letter (215 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 in)). Follow these steps to check the default paper settings.
  1. Click Start (c01827528.gif ).
  2. Click Printers and Faxes . The Printers and Faxes folder opens.
  3. Right-click the icon for your printer (c01532298.gif ), and then click Printing Preferences . The Printing Preferences window opens.
  4. Click the Paper/Quality tab, and then compare the settings in the Paper Size drop-down menu with the paper in the tray. If the size of the paper in the tray is not the same as the setting in the Paper Size drop-down menu, change the setting:
    1. Click the Paper Size drop-down list, and then select the size of the paper that is in the tray.
    2. Click Apply to save the settings, and then click OK to close the Printing Preferences window.
Step two: Print a test page Follow these steps in the order presented to print a test page. A test page might help determine if the printer installation caused the problem.
  1. Click Start (c01827528.gif ).
  2. Click Printers and Faxes . The Printers and Faxes folder opens.
  3. Right-click the printer icon (c01532298.gif ), and then click Properties . The Properties window opens.
  4. In the General tab, click Print Test Page . The printer prints the Windows XP Printer Test Page. Figure 7: Example of Windows XP Printer Test Page c01532301.gif Image: Example of Windows XP Printer Test Page.
  • If the Windows XP Printer Test Page prints successfully, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the page is blank, continue to the next solution.
Solution seven: Print from an alternate program Follow these steps to try printing from an alternate program, such as Microsoft Notepad or WordPad, to determine if the current program is causing the issue.
  1. Browse to the location of your saved document, right-click the file, and then click Open With . A window opens with a list of programs.
  2. Select a program other than the program you are currently using to print the document.
  3. Open the file in the program, and then check the contents.
NOTE: Most files open in plain text applications, such as Notepad or WordPad, even if the contents include unusual symbols or text that does not make sense.
  4. Try to print the file:
    1. Click File , and then click Print . The Print window opens.
    2. Select your HP printer from the Select Printer drop-down menu, and then click OK .
If successful, the printer prints exactly what displays in the program window.
    • If the document prints successfully in the alternate program, you do not need to continue troubleshooting. The issue is likely specific to the program you are trying to print from. Consult the program manufacturer for assistance.
    • If the document still prints blank pages in the alternate program, continue to the next solution.

Many a times the cartridges get empty. There is ink in the cartridges, this ink gets over or many a times dried up.Remove the cartridges and see. There will be a steel color nozzle at the base of cartridge, from where the ink comes out.Touch the tissue paper to that base and see,if there is ink coming out.Actually the ink should come out. There will be two cartridges in the printer. One black and one tri-color.On black cartridge when you touch the tissue paper you will get black ink on tissue. On tri-color cartridge when you touch tissue on its base you will get three colors, that are yellow--- blue and pink.( In printer language its called cyan--- yellow---magenta color). If there is ink in the cartridge then it should print,If you have replace the cartridge, then on its base there is a blue color tape. That tape has to be removed from its base.If the tape is not removed the cartridge will not print.-------- One more thing. Before doing any thing.Just do a self test and see if the cartridges are working. The procedure of self test is as follows:--- " 1) Turn the printer on.2) The power on green light should be steady green, not blinking green. 3) When its steady green at that time.Press the cancel and color button both together. 4) By doing this the green light will flash, and printer will take the paper. 5) On that paper the self test will get printed. But if the printer takes the paper and it comes out empty /blank then its cartridge fault. But if the self test is getting printed, then yes its confirmed that there is communication fault between printer and computer. In this case, replace the usb wire.Try new brand usb wire and see if that is helping. One more thing. When you install the printer driver. At that time never keep the usb wire connected between printer and computer.Only keep one side of usb connected to computer tower. In between the installation procedure. The message will come up on your computer screen" this message reads, connect the usb wire to printer. At that time connect the usb wire".As you connect the usb wire the message will come up on your computer screen. The printer is detected. If this message comes up then only your printer will work.If this message does not comes then, there is any of the three things faulty, that is usb wire, the usb port on printer side or usb port on computer side.If usb wire is faulty you can replace this wire with new and check. Its not a costly wire. But if any of the ports are faulty, then this ports are internally soldered on the main board. This ports needs to be re-soldered.This can be done by any printer/computer repair tech. Its hardly a 10 minute job to re-solder loose usb port. ------------- Try this troubleshooting procedure. This will help. Thanks.Helpmech.

Cannot print from computer. printer will print test pages, though

How the printer is connected to PC Via USB or using Network Cable. If it is connected Netwrok cable than printer configuration page and on netwrok configuration there will be IP Address if this is valid IP Address than reinstall drivers and upgrade the Firmware of the printer.

If Printer is connected USB than try different USB Cable and try different USB Port on the computer
If USB port on the computer is working fine and check in Device Manager if the printer has detected as unknown device or not detected at all.
If detected as unknown device than reinstall printer driver if not detected at all than USB Port on the printer is faulty you need to set up hardware repair of the printer.

Computer not talking with printer

First reboot the machine-- then if the red X is still there check for a paper jam-- and or empty ink cartridge(s)---

Then go into "Printers" and make sure YOUR printer has a CHECK mark next to it which means it is the default printer.

HP Photosmart Printer, Mac won't recognize with USB

Sounds like their is not communications between your printer and computer. Could be a bad USB cable - swap out and see if that fixes it. If not it could be a faulty USB port on the computer or printer. You can check the computer USB port by connecting another device, but there is no way to check the HP's USB port. I would also check printer USB port for dust bunnies! If you're not able to resolve, I think it is time for another printer.

Wont print at all

There are a couple of things to check. First, make sure you are sending the document that you are trying to print to the correct printer. If you have any word processors installed or any Adobe products, you will have what are refered to as "Document Printers" that convert what you are printing to a document compatible with email or other programs. If any of these "Document Printers" selected, then you won't have anything get printed on you printer.

The second thing to check is the port that your computer thinks the printer is connected to. To check this, as long as you are using a Windows Operating System,
  1. Open the window that shows your installed printer(s).
  2. Right click on the printer and select Properties from the drop down menu.
  3. Click on the Ports tab.
  4. See what port is checked and make sure that it is the same as what you have plugged into the computer. The most common ports are LPT1 or USB. The USB ports will say USB001 or such. If one USB port doesn't work, select another one and try printing a test page.
In the future, just as a friendly reminder, when posting a computer related question it helps if you provide what Operating System you are using. This way, anytime someone answers your question, they can tailor the answer to your particular system.

Canon i850

Hello  btfsplk,

Me is Vikram Kumar Thumu from India-Hyderabad. I have seen your message and issue on this issue. I would like to provide my suggestions on this issue.

Generally, this issue could happen if the Port selected that is Printer Properties  is not same as the Port connected to the Computer or Notebook, if this is the case the Printer starts Printing Blank pages from Computer . The issue could also happen if the Printer software is corrupted.

To resolve the issue I recommend you to check and try out below options:

1. try to restart the Print Spooler.

2. Make sure that you selected the correct port in the Ports tab of the Printer Properties.

Example: If your Printer uses USB cable to connect the Computer, then make sure that it is USB001 or USB002 is selected in the Ports tab of Printer properties.

Note:  Make sure that Printer is connected to the USB ports of Computer at Rear End and not in front end. Since, front end USB ports in Desktop Computer are meant for USB flash Drive or other USB devices and not for connecting Printers.

Well, I need much more information of your computer so that I can help you further steps of troubleshooting.

So please let me know below information:

1. Version of Operating System that you are using on your Computer.

2. Please let me know the Printer Model number and Serial number along with Manufacturer.

3. Did you receive any other error messages on this issue?

4. Please let me know cable type ( USB/Parallel) that you are using to connect Printer to the Computer.

Please mail the information at thumuvikram@rediffmail.com, I'll be glad to help you with further information on this issue.

Bye .
