Question about Garden

1 Answer

Hi there, I have an older Ariens 8 HP snowblower that has a carb that is full of ''varnish'' I guess they call it. Is there any way to clean this carb because a kit costs about $70 and a new carb is $110. Being as old as it is that is a lot of money to spend. Please advise me of any solution you might have. Thanks ****

You can try getting a couple of aerosol cans of carburetor cleaner. Use a plastic container of so kind like an old oil bottle cut in half or something similar, put the bowl in it and spray enough or your carb cleaner in it to soak it for a while. You can also soak the bowl nut and float and any other parts that are varnished up and try cleaning it up that way,
A COUPLE OF THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR HERE: WEAR EYE PROTECTION - THIS STUFF BURNS (EXPERIENCE SPEAKING HAHA)
DON'T GET IT ON ANY RUBBER PARTS, THEY WILL SWELL BEYOND USE
I purposely put the above in caps to draw your attention to it. Hope this helps you out.

Need a carburetor for old Ariens snowblower. Number on carb is 510121 but can't find anywhere?????

Carb was probably bought in from a specialist manufacturer by the engine maker along with the ignition equipment and the maker of the snow blower in turn would have likely bought in the engines.
Few manufacturers bother making stuff for themselves when others can do it better and cheaper.

If you want it to be authentic I suggest you get in touch with Ariens with details and pictures of your snowblower and ask them if they have anyone there with a long white beard and a memory to match who could tell you where the carbs were sourced. It will be a matter of playing detective and following a line of clues.

If you aren't bothered about authenticity there are a number of generic replacement carbs that could be made to fit and jetted to suit and if it is a governed engine the governor could probably be made to fit too.

Engine revving High and low, not constant

This is usually caused by a clogged main jet in your carb...which is epidemic with the gasoline today containing ethanol. You'll need to clean/rebuild or replace it. You can get replacement carburators online for ~ $25 sometimes so it's not even worth tearing them open anymore. One tip - take pictures with your phone as you disassemble the linkage so you put everything back in the same holes.

Our HMSK 80-110 electric start snowblower starts up right away, but the idling is very rough. It runs very smoothly when it is engaged in snow throwing.

The Tecumseh snow motors are notorious for idling rough. Especially the last few years of production. Most service techs just say "live with it" But there are a couple of things you can do to help.
It is not a carb adjustment issue. It's usually a fuel, clean carb issue.
First, use a premium grade fuel without ethanol and a fuel stabilizer. This will give you the best fuel mix.
Second, Remove the carburetor shield and clean the inside and outside of the carb with carb cleaner. Even though you can't see the carb usually, they do get varnish build up and cleaning it will help some.
Third, Put the recommended amount of fuel system cleaner in the gas. I use Sea Foam brand. Over a tank full or two you will notice a difference in how the engine idles.
Fourth, Use a high quality spark plug and use a new one every year. Make sure the gap is correct.
Good Luck! Feel free to as any other questions you may have. Don't forget to rate this answer!

Carburator problems- jets varnished up, runs on full choke only

Disassemble the carb and soak the entire carb in denatured alcohol. A bit of vibration will help to break up the varnish. The alcohol will eat the varnish in 15 minutes or so. Now finish with spray carb cleaner and an air hose. Concentrate on the pilot jet. Spray into every fuel circuit ( hole ) you can find.

My ariens snowblower only works in the choke position. once i turn it where it sould be it stalls

had same problem with a small 2 cycle outboard motor last year. I had run it during the summer, put it away for the winter and when I went to fire it up the following Spring it would only run with half to full choke. Old fuel had gummed up the carburater by letting it sit in there for a few months, had to disassemble and clean all the carb parts (including the jets) and it worked good as new. You could do it yourself or take carb to a small engine repair shop and have them do it. May or may not require a rebuild kit depending on how gummed up it is. Hope this helps.

Engine surges after warm

If your engine has an adjustment screw on the bottom of the carb. try adjusting that at high idle first also if you have a low idle screw. If that don't clear the surging than you might have to take the carb. off and clean it. If cleaning the carb. out dose not do it you may need to put a new carb. kit in. Any questions feel free to ask.
