Question about Poulan "Poulan" Push Mower

Open Question

Poulan starts, then immediately dies

Mower is less than three months old, less than 6 hours running time, so I assume there is no varnish buildup. Gas is fresh.

Assuming it is a B+S engine, if it starts fine and runs rough and smokey as it gets warm and will not get enough speed, the problem is with the Diaphragm between the carb and fuel tank, it costs about £3 and is easy to fit if you have a 10mm and 13mm spanners and a cross heded screwdriver, ver annoying but relatively cheap and simple fix. Max.

Sounds like a common fuel problem you need to remove carb & fuel tank and unless you can get a compressor they need a good blast out you may even take carb apart & check diaghram they have very small jets in fact most lawnmower shops have a sonic bath for this

Check air filter, replace if needed.
Check engine oil level and condition. Add/change as needed.
Check spark plug. Clean and re-gap if needed (.030 gap)
Drain the fuel and replace with fresh premium grade gasoline. If your local station has a notice on the pump regarding Ethanol content, drive to another station!

Most owner's manuals specify 89 octane or higher and most warranties become void if E85 fuel is used.

And finally, Oxygenated fuels are not your mower's best friend. :-)

Hope this helps.

Did you empty the carb bowl and clean out any old fuel & contaminants? This is the most effective way to determine fuel issues. It also gives you the opportunity to remove all old fuel from the fuel lines, filter, & drain the tank bone dry. You may have already introduced water from your previous efforts so take out the plug & pull the cord a few times to dry out the cylinder. Next start the first time with starter fluid since you may still have contaminants in the primer system. In the future use only non-ethanol fuel, a marine grade stabilizer such as "Sea Foam" and replace all fuel every spring. Fuel begins to varnish and break down after 1 month unless stabilizer is used. Ethanol gas absorb water from the surrounding air in about 2 months & only gets worse.

How do i get my toro gts-5 550 lawn mower to keep running?

The problem is likely varnish buildup in the carb. Add PAINT THINNER ( yes, I meant to say that !) to the gas. Use 1.5 ounces each of Xylol ( Xylel) and Acetone per 10 gallons of gas ( 5 gal. can will use 3/4 ounce each ).Drain gas tank and carb float bowl. Add fresh gas mixed with thinners. Remove air cleaner element and use quick starting fluid with upper cylinder lubricant to start mower, and keep it running with SHORT bursts of starting fluid until it will run on its own. You may also need to replace or clean air filter if it is old or dirty. continue procedure for 5 minutes or so. Remember to run Sta-bil fuel stabilizer through the system before you shut down for the season, as this will prevent the varnish build up.
I've been using thinner in all of my engines ( gas, pre mix, and diesel ) for a few years with no bad side effects. I've ridden over 15,000 miles on my motorcycle - getting better mileage and power, and not having to buy premium gas either.
Hope this helps!!

Engine dies when throttle engaged, assume carb needs adjusted, how to do that?

I'm not familiar with your brand of machine, BUT...

This symptom usually is not an indicator for a need for a carb "adjustment," but instead, it indicates a need to clean-out "gum" and "varnish" in the TINY passages [called "galleries"] inside your carb!!!!!

The gum and varnish problem is caused by leaving old, stale fuel in the carb for long periods of time.

POULAN RUNS GREAT THEN DIES WILL START UP AGAIN THEN ABOUT THE TIME YOU START TO CUT WILL DIE AGAIN AND KEEPS THAT UP

I hope you are using fresh gas, as when gas gets old from previous season use, it can be the problem. I have seen a spark plug fouling, giving the same results though. I don't know the hours you have run the saw, or the severe use it may have seen. Have you checked air cleaner? fuel supply? If it was set up for a long period of time with old gas, carb may need cleaning.
Hope all these questions stimulate some possible problem resolution

Will not stay running

You have a fuel delivery problem. Main reasons for this is a dirty or plugged up carburator. If you know what you are doing, clean the carburator. If you let gas set in it for more than a month or so without starting it up, the good ole ethonal in the fuel has gummed up inside the carb. Once you get the carb clean (jets, ports, etc) and it still doesn't run replace the fuel pump. Cheap as heck and easy to install. Both items can be done in less than an hour and cost you about 25 bucks.

We had a Poulan lawn mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine last year that started with the engine revving problem. The RPMs would go up and down and the fumes coming out of the mower near about killed...

There seems to be one common source for gas for the 2 mowers. You could be placing old or contaminated gas in the NEW and OLD mowers. The fumes comment you made leads me to think that the problem is with the fuel itself. Old gas smell horrible. Sniff test the gs can you use for filling the mowers. If it smells awful you know you need to get rid of the contents of the can rinse it and then re-fill it. There may even be water in the gas can that went straight into your new mower. IF you drain the gas from your mower and gas can and start anew and the problem persists then you should immediately seek warranty service for you new mower.

With the 2 mowers having different engines and the same problem it just points to the gas supply as the source of the problem.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Try to find the gas filter and or a sediment bowl on the mower or in the manual. Sounds to me like it is plugged.

Poulan ride on lawn mower will not run by itself--if you pour gas into the intake it will run until the sm amt runs out

It could be your fuel shutoff solenoid is not working or is stuck from gum, varnish or rust in your carb bowl. The fuel shutoff solenoid is located on the bottom of your carburetor. To check it, have someone, or yourself if you can reach the ignition switch, turn the key to the on position and back off several times while you listen by the carb. You should hear a click each time. If not, the carb will have to be taken off and cleaned and checked. You will probably find water and/or rust in your bowl plugging up the main jet. Best to take it to a shop.
