My riding mower front tires are hard to turn cause they want to point in different directions and not straight. what could cause this

1) The tie rod between the front wheels is bent or the adjuster nut has come loose.
2) The plastic wheel bearings have gone to sh*t on either or both sides
3) The steering knuckles were never greased and their bushings are shot to sh*t.
4) The front tires have come off the rims
5) The front axle beam has been bent

Find a small engine repair shop in the yellow pages and have a person with know how put his eyes and hands on it, you will know within a few minutes what is wrong.

there is a cap over the end of the axle, it snaps off. with the rear end jacked in the air remove the C-clip which you find under the cap. the wheels will then pull off. make sure you put them back on correctly, there is an inside and an outside. If you reverse it, you will rub a groove in the tire and it will go flat and have to be replaced and they cost more than car tires. And do not pull the wheel off in the lawn or in a gravel driveway. when the wheel comes off a small key will fall to the ground. you will need to re-install this key when you put it back together or the wheels will not move. if you lose the key into the grass or gravel you will have to go to a real hardware store or small engine repair shop to buy another.

Nothing is broken, just bent.Go to the front of the mower.Get low.In between the front wheels you will see a bar,or rod.It looks like a tie rod on a car. That bar should be bent slightly but when you hit something with the front tier it gets bent too much. One end of the bar screws in and the other nd is on a clip or pin.Remove one side, which ever is easiest for you. Then just bend the bar back to almost straight. You may have to do this several times to get the turning radius back to normal.

I have a yard bug with the 618-0351a transaxle

I just took my transaxle apart, (not a hard job once you have it removed from the mower) mine had only reverse, no forward . I found 2 small bolts had come out of the spring retainer for one of the bevel gears. One of the bolts had lodged between the shift collar & the gear resulting in the lock up you mention. Replacing the bolts, only this time using Locktite threadlocker on the threads has the little mower now happily going both directions . It would be a good idea to check the bolts in both bevel gears while you are in there. I found them loose on the other gear as well . wrenchbender1
