If this is a pc (not laptop) and you have just installed it on the back of the drive is pinouts youll have to set it to master if you have one drive and slave if you have 2 and be sure on the ide cable (assuming its not sata) the red line going down the cable is facing the power plug for the drive.Hope this helps, o and be sure all your cables and plugs to the drive is properly pluged in on the motherboard and the drive. Good luck

The system does not detect the dvd rom in bios and in windows

This can be a dvd failure but we can make sure that every thing is connected properly to confirm that the dvd is not working or what.
Did you mess up with the BIOS? IF not, remember to remove any power sources first. Open up your laptop, carefully remove the DVD rom and place it in the same place. Boot your system.
Hope this helps, Please feel free to ask me any further.

My CD-Rom drive will not work... it will not be recognized with my computer

As the computer switches on and the Acer logo is shown there should be a sequence that has to be pressed to enter the bios setup eg; F2 or F10 ,press it and go in the setup program ,on the main page it has your laptops information such as how much memory you have ,processor speed hard drive etc.
See if your CD ROM drive is listed ,also check the boot (or start up) device tab in that bios setup program to see if it's listed there with your hard drive.
If it is not listed then it has failed and will have to be relaced or has become loose and is not making correct contact(which is rare to happen ,in this case it has to be removed and reinserted again).
If it still has warranty then you should send it back.

Acer Aspire 5100 no longer "sees" its cd/dvd drive- anywhere.

You can check the BIOS to see if the drive is recognized and even attempt to boot from the drive using a bootable CD to verify it is functional (if using the Windows disc - just verify it reads - DO NOT REINSTALL)

If the drive works use the following to get the drive back in Windows:

Always backup your registry before editing and use care to find exact key!
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

CANNOT FIND CD/DVD DRIVE ON ACER ASPIRE 5100

Is the hardware listed in the BIOS? When the computer first starts up hit a key to get in the BIOS (Esc, F2 or F10 are most likely). If it's not listed in the BIOS then it's likely a hardware problem. Try checking the connections to make sure it's plugged in and getting power.

If it is listed in the BIOS, it's likely a problem within Windows. Check Acer's website for known issues with the cd-rom.

ACER ASPIRE 5100 DVD/CD ROM IS NOT DETECTED IN BIOS?

My Aspire 5100 not only looses the cdrom but also the hard drive! It sometimes beeps 3 times.. I'd go into set-up (BIOS) and niether the hard drive or dvd would be listed.. As a last resort, I flashed the motherboard bios with the latest version from Acer and so far the problem hasn't returned. I also set the laptop to hibernate after 30 minutes of non use when both on battery or on ac power. Reason? My problem always started when I left my laptop unattended for some time. When I'd return, the computer would be off.. not asleep or hibernating, but off - even though it was set to never turn off in the power settings in windows. When I'd turn it back on, that is when the hard drive and dvd rom would vanish in the BIOS. So as an added precaution, I set the laptop to always hibernate after 30 minutes.. Like I say, so far so good..

BIOS cannot detect DVD rom

That is due to faulty DVD Rom. You need to replace your optical drive.
