1998 1150412UD Mercury Outboard - is it 2 or 4 stroke

If it has an oil compartment, it has to be a two stroke. There is a rough and ready way to check. A four stroke engine has a compression stroke on every four strokes, whereas a two stroke has compression stroke on EVERY upward stroke of the piston. Remove the spark plugs, and turn the engine until you see the piston. Put your finger over the plug hole and turn the engine one revolution. Do you get compression? Keep turning, do you get suction and then compression again. If so it is a two stroke.

you can also follow the pipes from the oil tank and see where they go to? Yours should have a pipe from the pump to the carburetor inlet manifold.

On a new boat though, my advice for you is to take the boat and engine to a marine engineer for a service. The cost is minimal and you will get everything set up for the season, especially the carbs. You can ask lots of questions. The cost is about $150 and is well worth the piece of mind that you are not going to break down.

The critical bit you have missed from your post is the HP. If you Google

Mercury HP Serials

and you will end up at a site with engine details. Then google the same, but manual instead of serials. If you know the year of the boat, add that before 'Mercury'.

Use Evinrude XD50 two stroke oil. It is expensive but the best in clean running, non fouling and lack of acrid fumes. One $48 jug will last a season and a bit if you go out twice a week as I do. My boat goes to the marina on Wednesday :>)

I have a 20 hp mercury outboard serial#06082001.I want to know what year it is and if it's 2 or 4 stroke

If you drop the first zero it would put it at 1981.

http://www.themarinedoctor.com/msn.pdf

this site gives a different answer, as 1980- 81, so close. It SUGGESTS it is a 4 stroke engine.

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc2/Mercury/25%20%282%20CYL.%29%282-STROKE%29%28International%29/parts.html

It is likely a 4 stroke, but I won't give you a definitive answer, due to the damage it can cause with a guess!

A four stroke running with two stroke oil will just smoke, but a two stroke with no oil will seize and leave you stranded on the water with a seized engine!

A four stroke engine has valves operated by push rods or a pulley and a chain, a two stroke just has a head. Take a look at the engine and it should be obvious.

For your first service, I would suggest you go to a marine engineer. Ask all the questions, and get the right answers. When I had my 1986 Evinrude serviced, i typed a list of questions and left the list with him. i asked him when I picked up the boat and wrote the answers down. The first one was 'petrol to oil ratio and which is the best oil'. A basic service will cost you a hundred bucks and you will have some comfort that you are unlikely to break down, 6 miles offshore with only a paddle :)

My boat motor has low compression @ number 1 cylinder how can I fix it

2 possibilities:
-1 Your head gasket is burned. Caution, some Mercury engines have no head gaskets. I could tell if I had your serial number.
-2 Your cylinder has seized. If it's the upper cylinder, you'll have also to check your cooling system! Look at your spark plug if you can't see some 'aluminum' deposit on it. Or, inspect the inside of that cylinder with an endoscope.
Such an old engine is mostly not worth a complete overhaul. So, in case of seizing, just hone that 1 cylinder and use a new piston with rings.

It's in any case better not to use that engine in this state.
