Question about Fantom Titanium Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have an external hard drive and something changed in the registry as there is a bunch of mumbo-jumbo letters for location. It just blinks and does not show that it is hooked up in the computer. Red power light is on, but blue blinks all the time. What is the matter.

It sounds like some other device might have taken the drive letter that we assigned to your external hard drive. The links below will show you how to change the drive letter.

If you don't like the letter Windows has assigned to a new drive or you want to organize your drive letters in a certain way, you can change the drive letter.

You can assign the letters C through Z to each drive on your computer.

A and B are usually reserved for floppy disk drives, but if your computer does not have floppy disk drives, you can assign A and B to volumes.

You can see which drive letters are used on your computer by opening Computer.

Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Computer

Management. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation

In the Navigation pane, click Disk Management

Right-click the partition or drive that you want to change, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.

Do one of the following

To assign a drive letter if one has not already been assigned, click Add, click the letter that you want to use, and then click OK

To remove a drive letter, click Remove, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to remove it.

You might need to do some diagnostics to find out what is wrong.

If you have nothing to lose, format the machine.

You have to erase the entries from the Registry. Run RegEdit.

My vaio laptop with windows XP will not "see" an

Hi mpetersen809,

When you connect your external hard drive, does Windows chime or show an "installing devices" pop-up in the lower right corner of your screen? If this occurs, but you can't see the drive under "My Computer," your external drive might be trying to use a drive letter that's already in use by another device. To resolve this issue, you can manually set the drive letter for your external drive:
  1. Right-click My Computer and choose "Manage." A "Computer Management" window will appear.
  2. In the right pane, under "Storage," click "Disk Management."
  3. Locate your external drive at the bottom of the right pane. Disk 0 is your laptop's internal hard drive, so your external drive will probably be named "Disk 1" or "Disk 2."
  4. Right-click the area of the drive that says "Healthy (Primary Partition)" and select "Change drive letter and paths."
  5. Click the "Change" button, then select an unused drive letter (like Y or Q) from the drop-down menu and click "OK."
  6. Click "Yes" to confirm that you want to change the drive letter.
  7. Close the Computer Management window, then open My Computer to see whether your external drive is visible.
If this doesn't work, there could be a problem with the external drive. Test the drive by plugging it into another computer. If the drive isn't recognized on the second computer, contact Iomega for warranty support or replace the drive.

Good luck!

My book essential has worked for several months now til now.... the white light is just blinking and my computer doesntg seem to recognize it anymore what should i do?

From the user manual (click here) on page 4, the slow blinking means that the drive is in standby mode.
The user manual does not explain how to get the drive out of standby mode, but you may want to try the procedure for powering off the drive that is on page 34 that say to press the power button on the back of the unit and wait for the LEDs to turn off.
If the unit does not power-off on its own within a few minutes of pressing the power button, the next thing to do is the following:
Shut down your computer with the drive still connected and powered-up. Once the computer is completely powered-down (no lights on or noise coming from the computer, unplug the power cord of the external USB hard drive and wait a minute. After you've waited a minute with the external USB hard drive unplugged from power, plug the power cord back in to the external USB hard drive Make sure the USB cable from the drive to the computer is properly connected. Power-up your computer using the power button on the computer and let the computer boot as usual. Once the computer has booted, check whether the external USB hard drive is now available.
