The power of and wll clear the counters but will only be a temp fix.

Remover the case along witht top and sides. Look down each side and you will se 4 screws (one in each corner) remove thes and lift out the works. In the bottom is the ink pads. Be very carefull as they will be full of ink. Clean using running water (do not squeze dry as this will ruin them) run water untill no ink is seen and leave to dry in a natural way for about a day . in the su is ok . then put back to gether remembering were they all fit. Now do the on ac and hold resume button then let it go but still on on button push resume button 2 times and let both go wait ti all green then push resume button 4 times then wait . turn pronter off tehn on again .aall finished should work perfectly

STEP 1:
- Disconnect printer from AC power

STEP 2:
- Press and HOLD the POWER button, and
connect printer to AC power

This simple power off procedure worked on my IP1500! I think you can try this for ip4000 also...

Empty waste ink absorber IP4000

I found this at the Canon website. www.canon.com
I also have a Canon Pixma, seems my turn is up and coming too.
Ink Absorber Replacement Options This printer has an ink absorber that takes in ink during the printing and print head cleaning processes. The cleaning process is necessary in order to keep the print head nozzles from becoming clogged. Over the life of the printer, the amount of ink that the ink absorber has absorbed is calculated by the printer. Eventually, after substantial use, the printer will enter an error condition when the ink absorber is nearly full. At this point, printing is still possible by pressing the <Resume> button on the printer. To protect the printer from damage, you will not be able to print at all once the ink absorber is full.
Canon recommends having the printer serviced before the absorber becomes full. We are aware that there are many "do-it-yourself" Web sites that offer instructions for making this repair. Replacing the ink absorber is a complicated and potentially messy procedure. Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed, the ink absorber counter must be reset. Be aware that if you attempt this procedure, it is at your own risk.

The waste ink disposal is almost full and it won't print

The waste ink absorber is almost full. Press [OK] to continue but early replacement recommended. <See manual>
WASTE INK NEAR FULL The printer has a built-in waste ink absorber to hold the ink used during print head cleaning, for example. This error message indicates that the waste ink absorber is nearly full.
Press the OK button to cancel the error so you can continue printing.
Before the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, contact a Canon1.gif service representative. (You will need to replace a particular part of the printer.) Canon recommends that you call for service as soon as this error occurs. Once the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, printing cannot be performed until the Waste ink tank is replaced.
