Installation of new hard drive

Hello I have recently installed a new PATA hard drive in my PC- the CPU is an Athlon 2600+ and the motherboard is an ASUS- A7V8X-MX.
The problem is that I get an error message come up against 'other devices' in device manager. The message is a yellow question mark against 'PCI Simple Controller'- I'm guessing that this is a driver issue however I haven't got the drivers to install. I have trawled the Net for a driver but I am having no luck- could you point me in the right direction......PLEASE.

Yes that is a driver issue, you need to install the motherboard cd, all those with question marks are not functioning well if you will install these drivers you will soon experiencing the slow down of your pc upon boot up and sometimes it will hang. since your motherboard is an asus you may download the drivers to asus if you don't have the motherboard cd

I cannot connect SATA HDD

SATA HARD DRIVE - XP INSTALLATION
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

I have 2 questions:- 1. I have a hard disk of 80GB capacity.I want to augment my storage capacity with an additional Hard Disk of 500GB in the second slot of my CPU.Will my motherboard support that.My...

The motherboard has 2 memory slots with each slot allowing up to 1GB modules of DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200, DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot. Do not mix RAM speeds.

As for hard drives, the board has the capacity of:

PATA (Parallel) - 2 x ATA100 4 Dev. Max
SATA 1.5 Gb/s - 2

I would assume that the 500GB drive you have is a SATA drive. and the 80GB as PATA. If that is the case, then the two drives would be on different controllers and would work in the system. Typically, it is recommended that the SATA drives is the main hard drive holding your OS.

As always, you would need an open bay in your computer case as well as adequate power to the PWS to complete the installation.

What is compatible hdd with amd athlon products?

Hard drives are standardized, and have been for years. Any hard drive that uses the controller type provided by your motherboard (IDE/PATA or SATA) will work. If the motherboard was manufactured before 2002, you should probably use a drive less than 127 GB, because the space above that area may be inaccessible.

Don't want to format HD

Hello,

If you have installed everything correctlly, the BIOS should see your hard drive. If it is not, check your cable to make sure they are seated correctly; SATA cable, IDE cable, power cable, etc. Also, if you enter the BIOS, try resetting to default and rebooting your pc.

Post with your results and/or questions.

Trying to install a Samsung PATA 160GB HD in my recently bought ued Solo 5300.I see no cables etc, just some pins at the back of the HD slot. Do I need to take the whole unit apart to get at any cables?...

larry, is your motherboard PATA capable? meaning, are there 4-8 red female connectors on your motherboard?
If there is no compatibility with your PATA/IDE Motherboard, you can purchase at any local computer shops PATA-IDE converters... ranging $15USD.
This converts the PATA DATA+Power to your motherboard.
The HD you have requires Jumpers. Hence why they look like card slots on the back.
Before purchasing any cables, be sure to notice if your motherboard is PATA capable and relieve less stress on you :)
