I also have a JVC GR-DX28 with the same 'lens cap' problem.  I've just spoken with JVC and they have just arranged to collect the camcorder for repair the day after tomorrow. try the following link:

Apparently this same problem exists on many different models. I have a JVC grd72u. I called JVC @ 800-252-5722. I selected the "Corrective Action Program" prompt from the automated attendent. I spoke to a customer service rep. They are aware of the problem and are fixing it for free, but only until 12/31/07. I suggest you call ASAP and get your name in the computer. If the problem is something besides the CCD sensor, they will call you with the estimate to repair.

I have spoken to JVC (Victoria). This problem is known with a number of models and is covered under normal warranty conditions. You just have to send the camcorder to your local dealer and they will repair it.

My JVC GR-DX97 is doing the same thing. If pointed toward bright light slight image appears. Sound works fine. Stupid camcorder. I was also planning on using it Christmas morning. Doesn't make me want to run out and buy another JVC product.

I own a jvc-d93 digital video camera and when recording the screen is black and the words lens cap appear even though the lens cap is off,can you help.

Please check whether the Camcorder is fully charged. Then, try resetting the Camcorder to the factory settings. Try Power resetting the Camcorder.
To Power reset the Camcorder, remove the battery of the Camcorder press the ON button(if switch, then keep the switch in ON position) for 30 seconds and reinsert the battery in 1 minute. Then, check the operation of the Camcorder.
If the issue still persists, then service will be required. It seems to be an issue with the CCD of the Camcorder.

It's definitely an internal problem in your camera and it sounds like you don't have any warranty after 5 years. I don't have a step-by-step help guide for you since I don't know about this camcorder but in my opinion, if the camcorder is really that good, it's worth the repairs. Though HD camcorders are getting cheaper these days...

Display is black even after removing the lens cap

See my post of before. I just knocked the camera on the floor by mistake and it miraculously started working again after years. Shows it must be mechanical and not related to software.

Message -Lens Cap text appearing

Hi There, You probably have a ccd problem. Up to October of 2007, JVC was replacing the ccd under warranty as they had a defective batch, ( all of them ). You could try to take to a jvc service depot and ask if warranty will still cover the repair. Are you in the USA or Canada? I can help you if in CDA.
Let me know, mr cicmo.

Lens cap still on

Hi, this sounds like CCD chip fault.

JVC will repair this for free if your camcorder was sold between 2002 - 2004 as the CCD chips were faulty before they were fitted into the cameras.

go to them main JVC site and click "support" for details, offer runs until 31/12/08

My camcorder seems to think the lens cap cover is on even though it's not! as a result i get no picture in the lcd or viewfinder

There is 2 possibilities. One is defective CCD imager IC, which do not generating picture signal and 2nd is Lens Cover Switch, which is not funtioning properly.
Please check both of them.

Assuming you don't see any video through the viewfinder, it could be that the CCD has died on that camcorder. It happens, though not frequently.

If the video though the viewfinder is clear, there might be some sensor on the lens ring to indicate a lens cap, or an automatic lens cap not properly disengaging when put in record mode.

this sounds a lot like the infamous "lens cap" error, common with many models. check this out -,p398108/JVC-GR-DF450-Mini-DV-Digital-Camcorder.aspx I can't figure out If this model is on the list, I'm guessing there should be more to the model name here. Anyway, if you contact them you might learn its a free repair. Good luck
