NEC ND-6500A Cant burn DVD-R

I use NEC ND-6500A drive on my Dell Inspiron 700m and use Sonic to burn disks.
I can burn cds with no issues. But when I tried burning a DVD-R (Sony 1x-16x) I get the following error message:
Sense: 05 ASC: 30 ASCQ: 05 (Command 2A)

I downloaded the latest firmware in .zip format from
but when i started the file named NECND65_V225.exe it says that the drive NEC ND-6500A cannot be found!
I need help. I have no idea if it's the problem of firmware

I have the same problem. Dell tried to fix it online with the firmware and changing the registry key. This failed and they said it was a bad drive and sent me a new one. It still doesn't work. Here is the weird thing. It will still burn on old DVD-rs (8x). So I have to order them from ebay. If anyone has an answer, please also send to my email @ I will forget how I got here.

I Have NEC 6500A on my laptop. Until recently everything was fine. But now, it can read and write CD's, it can read DVD's but it DOES NOT WRITE any more. Driver update, firmwire, uninstall and reinstall of various Nero versions did nothing. Even format!!! Please any ideas are welcome!!!

I too have the same problem! I was able to bun 8X DVD+R's as recently as June 8, 2008. I tried today, after having purchased some 16X DVD+R's. The 16X's didn't work, but neither do the 8X's either. No idea what's going on.

My drive will burn cd's, read and copy DVD's but will not burn DVD's or recognise that there is an empty disc in the drive.

I was attempting to burn a file onto one of my "Memorex CD-R" Disc and while doing so notice a smell, that highly resembled something electrical being hot or burning. I immediately stopped and upon allowing to cool down, re-onserted another new "Memorex CD-R" disc and again the same odor returned. Thus I immediately stopped and again allowed the PC to what I figured to cool down, even though the laptop did not feel hot or even warm.

I then inserted one of my audio CD and everything worked fine. Thus leaving me very perplexed as to what was happening.

Now this has got to be a new one on everyone. After going out today to check out buyer a new DVD I decided before replacing my DVD+RW unit to burn another new
"Memorex CD-R Disc" and upon opening the case that the disc came in I notice the same type odor on each and every disc in the 50 pack sleeve?? Any thoughts regarding this matter?

    Thanks in advance

Same problem as experienced by others, its really the strangest thing. I have tried both the 203D and 203E firmwares from dell.

I figured out what was causing the problem with my NEC 6500A on my Dell laptop: The Sony Picture Motion Browser software that I was using to burn DVD's is only compatible up to Service Pack 2 of Windows XP. The day after I installed Service Pack 3, the software stopped burning DVD's. So I uninstalled Service Pack 3, rebooted, unistalled the Sony PMB software, rebooted and re-installed the Sony PMB software and I can now burn DVD's again. So check whether the software you're burning your DVD's with is compatible with whatever version of your operating system you're operating with. Hope this helps someone else!

I also have a nec nd-6500a on my dell laptop, and had some problems writing dvds. after lots of tries i came to the conclusion that most of the problems appear when using sony dvds, so my advise is use something else instead of sony (sorry for the bad publicity....) and also sonic is not that good of a burning software.

Where do i get drivers for my nec dvd+-rw 6650a

Here is link for Dell drivers fro your NEC DVD.

If you do note have a Dell, go to the home web page of youe brand and find Support and / or Downloads, and search for the driver there.

This is usually a fairly simple process, if you have the model number of the PC

NEC ND-6500A does not play DVD+ disc

ok, so what you need to do is to check on dell support website and check if you need to install some update drivers for the dvd rom drive or if you need to check your bios. you might find some forums or bulletins having the same problems and how they resolved it.

I have problem with my AVERATEC COmputer

This is a common issue with NEC DVD burners, assuming that your NEC DVD burner cannot read and write DVDs anymore. I had a similar issue with my NEC DVD burner, which couldn't read and write CDs, but DVDs successfully. This is usually due to wear and tear of constant usage of the drive itself and sometimes mechanisms inside the DVD burner cease to work. While Windows Troubleshooting, uninstalling and re-installing the drive are suggestable, I am afraid the only option is a complete DVD burner replacement.

CD/DVD won't eject, won't play, Device Manager doesn't recognize.

If it's only 8 months old, then you have atleast 4 months left on your warranty. The problem will either be the ide controller channel or the dvd drive and firmware has faulted, the same fault probably happens when you have put a dvd in and it wont read or eject. Return to the place of purchase, where the drive should be replaced or the notebook exchanged.

NEC nd 6500a

Hi, I think that it's a firmware issue. If the unit is till covered by warranty, you may have to bring it back for replacement. When doing so, it may be to your advantage to bring the PC while it is still attached and blank CDs and DVDs just to demonstrate the particular failure and likewise to be able to test if and when it would be replaced. If for some reason, you would want to try DIY, please look over these sites that you may have an idea.𠓝 Hope this be of some help and pls post again how things turn up. Good luck and kind regards.
