i have a dsl connection. my network is a home one with 4 computers (including my laptop) . since i know what all are doing as far as uploads/downloads i can control for this when i do my speed tests . in another series of speedtests i just conducted , i am consistently getting in 3.5 speed range while at same time my pc down a flight of stairs and next to the internet connection and router to another access point is getting consistently in the 4.5 range. you are right about not feeling difference between 3.5 and 4.5 but between 1 and 4 you definately feel differnce. is it regular to have a 25 % difference between speeds using the farther access point from the router and dsl internet connection?

    1. I am sure no one using my bandwith.
    2. Whether or not isaccurate ( i was not able to get a clear gage on speed from windows task manager - i did not understand how to get a internet download and upload speed gage ...)... it gives me an immediate comparison . I consistently check it and get one speed and then IMMEDIATELY after disconnecting the electricity from my edimax AP, wating a minute and reconnecting - i get AT LEAST double the speed. This has been happening over the course of a few weeks since i discovered the problem.

Are you sure no one else is using your bandwidth? The fact that interrupting the connection speeds it up suggests that something or someone else is using it.

Also, you need to realize that speed tests like this assume that nothing else in your computer is using the bandwidth. Anything like file-sharing programs or automatic updates (including Windows updates) might be taking the bandwidth that you are missing. A better measure of what is actually coming into your computer is something like RxTx or the networking tab in Windows Task Manager.

You dont say what internet access technology you are using - DSL, Cable Modem, satellite, etc.
It is possible that your aggregate speed is being throttled by excessive traffic somewhere ELSE in the network and it may have nothing to do with the link from you access point. When you reset it, it may attempt to operate at the maximum speed only to be throttled by some other choke point in the network.
When you reconnect and get the 4-5 speed, how long does it last? Can you actually see the difference in performance? Most people cant tell the difference unless they are downloading large files.

Mike is right about all of the background activity that can be going on in your PCs. Unless you are sure of those settings, that could be a problem.

Since this is a B/G router, I assume (at least based on your speeds) that you are operating in the B mode, i.e. all of your computers are operating wirelessly and using the B mode data rates. The computer that is CLOSEST to the access point antenna, will normally have a higher signal level which results in a higher "data rate." As one's computer gets farther from the access point, the signal level drops and the probability of errors in the wireless link increases. Once errors start occurring, information has to be retransmitted and protocols force retransmissions until errors are eliminated. This can also slow down the performance of the network. Let me know if this makes sense to you. Thanks,
