Question about LaCie (300770) 250 GB Hard Drive

2 Answers

I have 2 LaCie drives. One a 250 and a 360. I think I may have used the wrong power source at some point. The light comes on but there's no spinning our power up. I'd like to recover files. Any hope? thx

I'm use a mac and have 2 LaCie external drives (not very old) that I think I used the wrong power supply. The lights come on but no fan sound or spinning noise. They are a 250 and I think a 360.

If you remove the drives from the cases then you can connect them via a USB /IDE / SATA adapter to your PC. This is self powering and will allow you full access to the drive so you can retrieve your files. The adpaters a freeely available at most PC stores or via eBay for a few $$ /££/ Euros. I have two fo these and rthey work without any problems.

There is hope for you.

Be careful as hard drives are just that ! They are not flash drives so should be treated with care, no bumps, knocks etc.

It is pretty common for this to happen

Your best bet is to remove the drive from its enclosure and connect it directly to a suitable PC. If the PC is new enough it should have both SATA and IDE connections.

You will need a suitable cable or as a temporary measure you could disconnect a CD ROM drive if it is an IDE connection and use that.

Only do the connections with the PC off !

It may take a little longer to boot the PC in most cases that is normal.
You may also have to check the BIOS to make sure it can see the drive but that is not always the case if you have a SATA card installed.

When you have finished connecting boot the PC.

If all goes well you will be able to see the drive and recover data.

In fact if you can see the drive and get at the information you may want to stop there for a moment.

The fact that you can get at it would indicate that just the enclosure is damaged !

That is a big plus as enclosures are pretty cheap and you can install the drive in a new one and carry on as if it never happened (Phewww)

If however you can see or use the drive at all then the news is not good i am afraid.

Hope its the first case and not the second.

My Lacies are also usb, firewire and sata

Had a couple of issues with a cheaper firewire cards AND driver issues.

Also had a few that didnt travel well and internal connections became loose so thats another area you may want to look at.

Power Light comes on, no function what so ever

Check to make sure that the FireWire or USB cables are
correctly attached and firmly seated in both the drive and
computer's FireWire or USB ports. Disconnect them, wait 30
seconds, and reconnect them. If the drive is still not
recognized, restart your computer and try again. If they are
correctly connected and your drive still does not power on,
trying using the optional power sharing cable, described in
section 2.3 Connecting the Optional Power Supply of the LaCie Mobile Hard Drive User Manual.

I think I've plugged in the wrong power adapter. Now, once connected, my Lacie makes one whirring noise and fizzles out.

If the wrong power adapter was plugged in the electronic circuitry has been damaged. The only option is to replace the whole hard drive system.

Imac is not detecting my LaCie External Hard Drive

Do you have a CD disc software installer of your external hard drive (F.A. Porshe 160GB).? If you got it, you must reinstall it, so that your Imac can detect it. Otherwise, find it at the internet and download it.
The power failure could have damage some stored data about your External Hard Drive in your Imac. That's why, you have to reinstall it. Send us your e-mail comments for us.

Lacie d2 120Gb Firewire 400 won't start/spin

What you have is a common hard drive in an enclosure, check eBay or OWC (google it) and get an enclosure for the drive (I would take the drive out first and make sure it is ata not a newer sata, other world computing will reply to an email and I have used them in the UK and Canada, they are in the USA) the enclosure should be cheap ($20 or so)

I had the same issue -- turned out that power supply was going bad so the drive wouldn't spin up all the way; this could explain the strange noises you're hearing. I put in a support ticket with LaCie at their website and they sent me a new power supply at no charge (I was within the warranty period, I think).

Drive is on, won't mount, buzzing

It does not sound good, the hard drive may be faulty or even the drive enclosure could be faulty.
Try thr following:-
1. Take the LaCie drive and connect it to another MAC, if it reads the drive, your in luck.
2. Dismantle the drive case and remove the hard drive and reconnect it again (a few times). The drive may need reseating to make proper electrical connection. Test it in your MAC.
3. The LaCie case could be faulty, remove the drive and insert it into another working LaCie drive case. Test it in your MAC.
4. If the hard drive is faulty, there are hard drive data recovery companies that can retrieve your data, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their service.

In future I would not rely on a single device for backing up important data. You should get 2 LaCie drives or a dat tape drive plus a LaCie drive and/or burn the data on BlueRay disks.
You should also protect your computer and devices against lightning strikes, power outages/blackouts and power surges with an UPS (uninterruptable power supply), especially when you are editing, burning, copying/back up your data.

Lacie not working

Does your drive make any unusual sounds like any of these: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php ?
If yes then you got a problem - it's something mechanical with the heads.
If it sounds normal or doesn't spin up at all - try to connect it to another computer and if still no go - remove the internal drive from enclosure and connect directly to PC via SATA port.
