I have the same compressor and it shuts off at about 45psi! Motor feels warm. I replaced the pressure switch and fittings, what could it be?

The regulator and emergency release valve need to be checked. It should shut off once the PSI hits the target pressure. If the motor is staying on and the pressure never raises above 70 lbs, then air is escaping, either the emergency prv or a seal has blown

If your gonna change the a gasket in the motor, look in your manual for a expanded view (picture showing the engine all apart with little dashed lines showing where each piece goes) and it will list each peice with the product code for ordering that peice.

What type of oil to add

Mobile synthetic 10-30 , Craftsman compressor oil if K-mart or Sears are near by. You can also use a non-detergent 10 - 30 motor oil , I use Mobile or Craftsman in mine. I have three - one is a Campbell Hausfeld this oil is per their book - (minus the Craftsman)

What type oil is used in the Craftsman 1.5 compressor?

Use only special oil for air compressors. It's higher refined and usually clear in color. They have the exact stuff called for at sears. Hope this helps.

The pump used on your compressor was incorporated into different designs thus needed access to oil fill from one side or the other. Part number for oil plug was std-220 or 27642, but you can use just regular standard pipe thread plug with square head. If the oil plug fits the other hole. Buy plumbing parts at Lowes. Good Luck

Compressor fills air tank and when it cycle to refill tank it kicks a 20 amp dedicated circuit breaker. Sears looked at it twice and said it is OK. Changed breaker with new one because Sears said it...

try this. When compressor shuts off. TURN OFF POWER. then spin the compressor backwards or forwards until it is off the compression stroke. Turn unit back on. If it doesn't blow the breaker, then it is worth looking into the type of compressor (pump) you have. Many have a "reed valve" and that might be failing, holding the compressor itself under load when it shuts off so that on restart it is under heavy load and the motor draws too many amps to get it started hence blowing the breaker anyway hope this helps

Check for a leak between you compressor head (pump) and your tank. Your pump output may be good but as your tank pressure gets higher the leak will not allow the tank to build up.

1 hp 3gal craftsman compressor will only build up to 20lbs pressure in tank. how much compression should single cyl have on compression stroke?

A piston in any engine should be around 100 psi I would guess. A Chevy 350 used to be around 150 psi. An air compressor that only pumps enough air to reach 20psi is obviously too low on compression. Nailers and the like need 80 or more psi. The intake valves may be shot, the unloader might be stuck or piston rings are worn.

Sounds like the pressure regulator has gone bad. That controls how much PSI your system is aloud to have. If this fails it will not fill to max capacity. I would replace that and all will work just fine.

Craftsman 3 gal., 1.5 hp air compressor: won't auto shut off, builds only 40 lbs pressure, air leaks from the 2 holes in oil filler cap?

The compressor will not auto shut off until it reaches the preset pressure which is usually around 100-130 psi - your problem is leakage of air from the oil filler cap suggesting that you have a failed internal valve.
