Question about Broderbund The National Geographic Magazine: 1940's for Windows, Mac

1 Answer

Can you help me install National Geographic Magazine (1888 to The 1990s) on Windows XP? The multi-disk set was designed for Windows 95/98 and neither NGS, Mattel or Broderbund any longer provides tech support.

Before doing what you recommend, should I uninstall NG magazine completely?

I asked you earlier if I should uninstall NG Magazine before installing per your instructions. Yes, I do have the "Install Me" disk.

To install National Geographic multi CD is very simple, Even it is designed for Windows 95/98 it works with Windows Xp.

The instruction for installing is as follows:

You will need the Install Me CD to install the program, but you do not need it for searching or reading the archived articles. However, you should store the Install Me CD in a safe place where it will be accessible if you need to reinstall the program or watch the tutorial.

To begin installing, Inset the Install me CD and Open My computer_>CD DRIVE(open by double clicking), Once opened you can see a file named SETUP, Double click and folow the on screen instruction(by clicking Next) to install it

During installation, the program will ask you which screen size you want to use, Best Fit, 640x480, 800x600, or 1024x768. If you are not sure which size to choose, select Best Fit and the program will pick the best one for your current display settings.

During the installation, setup will ask to find your Internet browser. You can set up Internet access right away, or run the Internet Link setup later.

To view the program videos, you must have Apple's QuickTime for 32-bit Windows (Version 3.0 or higher). If needed, the program will launch this QuickTime setup program automatically. You can also use existing, higher versions of QuickTime.

The program is equipped with an autorun feature. To use this feature, you just select any CD from the set and insert it into your CD-ROM drive, label side up. When the CD-ROM drive has recognized the CD, the autorun screen will appear. You can click anywhere on the opening screen to skip the introduction video.

Each time you start The Complete National Geographic, you will be asked to sign in, unless the “Automatic Sign-In” preference has been checked. When you sign in, the program creates a file in your name. All of the bookmarks, search criteria, and results lists that you save are stored in this file. The ability to reuse this stored information can save you time in future sessions. If you don’t sign in, this information is lost when you close the program

I need a Manual for National Geographic NG114AZ as well as replace the adjuster for the erecting eyepiece. where do I get these>

I think you are asking for a replacement focuser. You can probably find one here:

A manual is another question. These scopes are imported and no manuals are available. However the manual only has assembly instructions it does not tell you how to use the telescope to find objects in the night sky.

Find a local Astronomy Club and the members will help you set it up-- very easy once you see it done 1 time.

Clear skies.

How do i use the peice that hooks up to your laptop?

This is NOT a computer controlled scope--

You probably have some kind of CD disk that has a planetarium program on it.

Here is a review of the telescope.

I go through all installation steps OK but when I click on icon to start program I get message "NGMAG2 has encountered a problem and need to close." Other attempts state that program has been installed.

That is because of your display.

you can:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Appearance and Themes.
3. Click Display.
4. On the Settings tab, click Advanced.
5. On the Troubleshoot tab, move the Hardware acceleration slider control to the third position (from the left), and then click OK.

Note The following message is the description for this position:
Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations, as well as all cursor and advanced drawing accelerations. Use this setting to correct severe problems with DirectX accelerated applications.

6. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box.

Leave the other drive in; no the other windows will not cause problems cos its not set as boot 'C' drive, you can deletewindoes off the drive or format it within windows.

I don't think that the drivers you installed are the cause of the boot problem it may be the other drive, remove old drive and try again, but make sure in the bios (F2 or Del on boot up) it is correctly recognising the new drive.

delete this path:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer
