Question about Computers & Internet
I have a compaq evo n1020v running windows XP Pro. I upgraded the ram recently but it's not showing up correctly. I added 1gb of ddr2100 but it's showing up as 480mb. Any idea what the hang up could be? I know it will take a full gig of ram because I checked before I bought it. Thanks!
Your AGP video card is using up 512MB.
In the BIOS, look at the video "frame" or "memory" allocated to it and change it from whatever it is (512MBB?) to a lower amount and reboot and check memeory again.
Once this is successful, fill-in any empty memory slots with the old memory modules.

This sounds as thought he RAM is faulty.
You need to have installed 2 x 512 MB DDR 266 SoDIMMs and not 1 x SoDIMM.
If you have placed 1 x 1Gb SoDIMM in ther EVO this would account for you only seeing 480Mb of RAM.

I came across this thread while trying to solve my similar problem. I am a tech that cleans up operating systems and fine tunes performance.
One of the tricks I use is to run MSCONFIG and set the boot options to max memory and max number of processors to speed up the boot time.
If you do that, and then add additional RAM to your system, it will remain stuck on the max memory you previously specified in the boot options.
Uncheck the max memory option, restart your computer, and problem will be solved.
