Use white balance apparatus CA210 and change to BBY channel to adjust white balance; Only need to adjust chromaticity coordinates when color temperature is 10000K (namely "COOL") for the unit. Unless you've changed the white balance in one of the PSAM modes, your camera should still be set to Auto White Balance. See the "White Balance" section beginning on page 53 of the manual: http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/coolpix/CP8400_en.pdf
cameras have a automatic white balance so if you move the camera it changes the white balance varing the brightness if white balance is put in manual and a white sheet of paper is put around six inches from the lens and whit balance set it will not vary as long as the lighting is constant
May I suggest you check your White Balance. It is best to always set the white balance manually before shooting. If it is in Auto then the white balance can change every shot. If you fix it it is best to set it before you shoot.
Are you saying that you're using a white background but it doesn't appear white in the pictures? If so, then yes, you need to change the white balance to match the light. Probably "tungsten" but you could try different settings and pick the one you like best or you could use a white piece of paper and set a manual white balance.
Sounds as though the white balance is off, check your manual on how to alter the white balance to manual - then change it back to auto. It should fix it.
to go to the last preset white balance after turning of and on the cam , you should just click (but not hold ) on the whit balance switch but you have to select manual first ,
and if you want to set white balance then you should hold on the white balance switch for more than 4 seconds
