Sounds like you have something locked up.

Take a picture/draw a diagram of serpetine belt routing.

Remove the belt, then try turning each individual item the belt powers to see which one is locked up.

I'd start with the AC Compressor first, then alternator, the belt tensioner, power steering pump, and whatever else is powered by the belt.

None of my pulleys will turn on my jeep Cherokee larado

with the belt on or off? If when off, anything not turning means the bearings are probably frozen. The units would need replacement. Its a coincidence that all are not turning at the same time. CHECK CRANK & CAMS WITHOUT THE BELT. IF THOSE ARE N/G YOUR STARTING TO LOOK AT A MOTOR REPLACE OR SERIOUS REPAIR.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee will not start. Serpentine belt broke, so I replaced it, but now it will not start even with a jump. only clicks. Starter?

Maybe.
But what caused the belt to break ?
You might want to make sure the crank will turn and that the engine is not locked up.
If the crank turns, you would need to check for battery voltage at the starter.

I need a diagram for replacing a serpentine belt also are all the pulleys supposed to move that hold the belt on

older-5.7l-belt.gif
There were 4 different engine sizes for that year truck.
It looks like the belt route is the same for all.
I hope this helps. God Bless

1998 grand cherokee 4.0 eng. crank shaft pulley,is there a back piece for the belt to go on?

are you talking about the serpentine belt or the timing chains, the serpentine belt is what drives the alternator, power steer, water pump, and goes around a few idlers. and around crank pulley that is in front of harmonic balancer. Did the belt fall off? is the pulley missing? cause it should be very self explanatory and visual.

I have a 1996 jeep grand Cherokee. The belt does not stay line up on the pulleys. Make a squeling noise. I believe it might be some bearing. I do I diagnose? What causes that

You will need to remove the belt and check each pulley and idlerfor play/ slop
My best answer is you will find an idler pulley that is shot

Pulleys and driveBelt move freely when engine off, but they dont

sounds to me like the belt is just sliding on the crank pulley. Could be a separated harmonic balancer. Check the big pulley on the bottom.

Waterpump pulley removal

Pulley unbolts from the front of the pump. Remove belt after you loosen the pump bolts. you can lean on the belt to keep the pulley from turning as you break the bolts loose.

Serpentine belt

The pulley's aren't supposed to spin freely with the belt on. The belt connects all the pully's to the crankshaft, which does not spin freely because it is attached to the pistons inside the engine. To turn the pulleys, you have to turn the crankshaft, which in turn moves the pistons inside the engine up and down.

1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic with serpentine belt and fan problem or water pump?

Hey Dougnchico,

I'll bet your car died. And it over heated, And the battery was flat
, And the steering went out and every other system run off of the belt.

This is for anybody who has had trouble getting a serpentine belt on. It's easy and doesn't require a prybar.

  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • Locate the tensioner pulley. It's one of the smaller ones and is mounted on a spring loaded arm. It's job, as the name suggests, is to keep the belt tight. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done
