The single msi file will not work definitely.

Install WL Communications Platform... from where???

Go to http://download.live.com/messenger, then download the installer...

during installation options, choose to install MESSENGER and MAIL options... the others are optional.

If you already installed the single MSI file, just install the MAIL option, the WL communications platform will be included after the installation of MAIL option.

Although the solution is being posted months after the question is raised, let this help others having the same Dr.Watson issue.
For this, you can ignore the Error Reporting window, or turn off error reporting so it wont dump your windows drive with GBs of unwanted error dump data. If you are good with Registry Editor, follow the steps below:
Open your Registry Editor and browse to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionAeDebug . Create a new string value (REG_SZ) with name 'Auto' and enter its value as 0, so error reporting gets disabled.
May be this article should help you.

Error Reporting Keeps Showing!!!

Boot into Safe Mode and see if the computer will let you uninstall Windows Live. If it does, reboot the computer into normal mode and Re-Download the installation files for Windows live. Are there any details or technical information provided when the error message shows up? Also, outdated drivers have been known to cause similar issues.

Windows live messenger won't run

I have the same wireless adapter and have had the same problem with Windows Live Messenger. If you click Control-Alt-Delete and check your running Processes you will see msnmsgr.exe.
Close it.There will be one shown for every attempt you made to start windows live.Close them all.
Next reset your Wireless Router by unplugging the power cable for 30 seconds or so.Plug it back in and your Windows Live Messenger should start.
