Back wall ice buildup, fridge not cooling but freezer is fine other than ice. Back wall of refrigerator squishes with sound of water behind it. Have had it unplugged for 24 hours, ice gone.

Anytime you have ice buildup in back of freezer it indicates that the auto defrost mechanism is not working. Check the defrost timer, heater element, defrost thermostat for proper operation.

remove the freezer shelves and remove rear inside panel in freezer, under the evaporator located here theres a heating element,it has probably opened up and can no longer heat, this is a very common problem with g.e. SxS refrigerators, replace it by unplugging unit, then remove 2 screws holding heater bracket and unplug heater and replace g.e.heater part # is WR51X10101

GE Side by Side, Frost Free, model TFF19DWB, frost beginning to build up in the freezer, freezer not freezing, and fridge not cooling enough.

You have bad defrost heater. Remove the back wall of the freezer and use ahir dryer to melt all of the ice from the coils. Replace the heater that is at the bottom of the coils and you will be good to go. Should be able to get the heater from any appliance parts store. Melting the ice off the evaporators will buy you about 5 days of cooling which should give plenty of time to get the heater changed. Good luck and hope this helps.

Not cooling properly

Let it defrost for awhile. Hook it back up, After on for a bit, check the fan under the fridge to see if it works. Also is there any air blowing inside the fridge and freezer. If not then the cooling fan has gone bad. Thats easy to replace. If none of the above then eather the compressor is going out but doubtful being there is ice on the back. But the freon could be low.

I suggest that you check your defrost heater in the freezer. If this is the problem, then if you empty out the freezer section you will see a solid sheet of ice on the back panel. If the ice is there, then you may need to replace your defrost heater, we had this same problem just a few days ago. Once the heater was replaced, the fridge started cooling about an hour or so.

GE Bottom Freezer Refrig

i assume this is a frost free type with air drive from freezer to fridge to cool fridge.
if so, take back plate off inside freezer and you may find ice build up especially towards the top of the coils. melt off with a hairdryer carefully. the nother thing that may happen is that the return duct for air from the fridge may also become blocked with ice. this is more difficult as it is usually hidden behind the coils and the best bet in this case is to switch off for 24hrs with the door open

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer/control board
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.

  • if is not cooling at all (completely warm/ room temperature) then it could be the start switch on the side of the compressor.
if is a little cool but not cool enough, Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
