Question about Toshiba e-Studio 205 Copier

Cannot receive faxes using voip services. Is there something we need to disable on the machine for the faxes to come across properly - like the ECM? HP has the same problem.

Some voip services do not support faxing OR they charge extra for the data transmission service.

Check with your provider. The problem is not with your machines.

How to disable ECM and Reduce Baud rate for Canon MF4270 G3 Fax ?

Your approach is correct however it doesn't look like the MF4270 provides for these settings. One might expect to be able to select G3 or ECM or set a lower TX speed.

I located the settings for different Canon Fax machines here:

ECM error message

Noise in the phone line, or low signal strength during fax transmission can result in fax failures. Noise or poor signal strength can cause a partial or complete loss of fax information during transmission. When Error Correction Mode (ECM) is on, the receiving fax machine checks the fax information for errors during reception. If the receiving fax machine detects an error, the receiving fax requests that the sending fax resend the information. Resending all or part of the information can make transmission times longer, but helps improve the quality of the received fax.
If the phone line quality or signal strength is extremely poor, sending a fax can fail. Turning off ECM can improve the ability of the product to send a fax successfully when the phone line quality is poor. However, the image quality of the received fax might be poor.
If ECM must be off to send faxes successfully, have the telephone service provider check the phone line quality. For an HP Fax, turning off ECM from the control panel does not necessarily mean that fax transmission will not use ECM. Fax products use ECM as follows.
  • All faxes sent in color use ECM.
  • All faxes sent at the highest transmission speed use ECM.
  • The ECM setting affects only sent faxes, not received faxes.
Enabling or disabling Error correction mode (ECM)
  1. On the product control panel, press the Menu button (c01743394.gif ).
  2. Use the arrow buttons (c01073166.jpg ) to select Basic Fax , and then press the OK button (c01335940.jpg ).
  3. Use the arrow buttons (c01073166.jpg ) to select ECM Mode , and then press the OK button (c01335940.jpg ).
  4. Use the arrow buttons (c01073166.jpg ) to select On or Off , and then press the OK button (c01335940.jpg ) to confirm the setting.
  5. Press the Back button (c01496476.gif ) twice to return to the main screen.

Fax machine does not receive FAX

The problem is that the codecs used by VoIP IADs are designed to compress voice, not the analog signals sent and received by modems.
In a VoIP Internet world, voice is first converted into packets and then they are sent over the connections that make up our our vast Internet. They may take slightly different times to arrive at their destination. In doing so some packets may be discarded, but the end result is that the receiving VoIP device has enough packets to make a clear and understandable conversation.
We suggest these settings on a fax machine for faxing over VoIP; slowing the transmission rate down and allowing the machine to continue receiving the transmission even though a few bits of data were lost, then faxing over VoIP can become more consistent. Our suggestions in many cases can resolve issues that prevent faxing over a VoIP connection, but not in all cases. If after trying and making all the VoIP fax changes we suggest you still cannot fax over your connection then try a Internet Fax service.

Fax will not recieve on new installed 6150 all in one. I am on comcast system, answer machine is automatic, and fax will not come though the system, only the answer machine picks up. How to fix???

I maybe be a bit off here but basically if you are using a VOIP voice system and fax on that you will never get fax to work properly. You'll be able to send but receiving has always been a problem with VOIP systems. I think if you're going to try ECM must be turned off. Compression on a compressed line doesn't work too well. Wish I had better news. Good Luck

My problem is that I have just purchased Vonage as a VOIP phone line. I have a HP LaserJet 3055 printer/fax and I am trying to send faxes but it does not work. I was instructed to lower the baud rate,...

Configuring the V.34 setting to Disable (Enable is the default setting) to lower the speed.

Voice over IP (VoIP) services provide normal telephone service, including long distance service through a broadband Internet connection. These services use packets to break up the voice signal on a telephone line and transmit it digitally to the receiver, where the packets are reassembled. The VoIP services are often not compatible with fax machines.

If you continue to have problems faxing, contact your VoIP provider. Because the installation process varies, the VoIP service provider will have to assist in installing the all-in-one fax component.

Although a fax might work on a VoIP network, it can fail when the following events occur:

• Internet traffic becomes heavy and packets are lost.

• Latency (the time it takes for a packet to travel from its point of origin to its point of destination) becomes excessive.

How do I turn off ECM in my Brother MFC 8220?

From the Brother website:
If you are using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), (a technology that allows you to make telephone calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line, review the information listed below. If you are not using VoIP continue to Step 8.

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is not a marketed feature of your Brother machine, however there is a compatibility setting available with this machine that may assist with sending and receiving faxes when using VoIP. Adjusting this setting lowers the baud rate (modem speed) and turns ECM (Error Correction Mode) Off. To adjust this setting follow the steps listed below:

  1. Press Menu or Menu/Set => Fax => Miscellaneous => Compatibility.
  2. Select Basic.
  3. Press OK or Menu/Set. (For touchscreen models, skip this step.)
  4. Press Stop/Exit.

I have a new phone carrier(Vonage) and a new DSL modem from at&t. Prior to obtaining either, my fax machine worked fine. Now, I can't send or receive faxes..(Why)

This is a common issue with all fax machines that use a voip service. Basically, the reception and transmission features of the fax machine are not compatible with voip service. There is a modification that you can perform that usually allows you to avoid this problem, you must lower all transmission and reception speeds of the fax modem; this allows the data to be properly carried over the line without much loss or degradation.

Using on voip

If your VOIP adapter has only one service line (VOIP PIN configured) then you have to remove the phone line and connect the FAX line. Now if you have the two service lines (in the both port separate VOIP PIN should be configured) - then you may connect this FAX to the other port. Both (Phone as well ad FAX) will work simultaneously. (Remember - two seperate PINS are required if you attach phone as well as FAX line in same adapter). After attaching the FAX - every think is normal like normal FAX line. Generally you don't have to dial pre country code like 011 or 00 or +, just dial the number starting from Country code.
