Depends on what Operating System your using. If it's Vista you can press F8 button during the post and you will see an option for repair your computer. Then once you do this it will take you to the factory restore wizard. Or you can press F11 during boot up and get the same wizard.

You need to do what's known as a "destructive recovery" do this you will need the original restore discs that came with the computer.....this will revert the computer to its original state when it was new.
Warning however! will lose everything that you have installed on your computer so you need to back-up everything, files/ photographs etc.

After my computer is idle for a short period i lose my internet connection

It could be that your network card power management is set to switch off the network card after a set period. Its best disable the power management.
Click on the start button and look for control panel. Click on control panel and look for network connections. int there should be a local area connection right click on that and click on properties.
Look for the configure button and click on it. Next look for the power management tab and untick allow the computer to turn off this device.
That should do the trick.

Sud I turn off my p/c every night or just let it go to sleep

There is a lot of controversy over this issue, and it depends on how you use your PC. I use my PC for business, from 8-16 hrs a day. The best time to scan for viruses and perform other maintenance tasks is when I'm not using it, which happens to be while I'm sleeping. I set my PC go into hibernation, so it will 'wake up' at 3 a.m. and perform the full virus scan. There can also be problems with 'cold starts' on your hard drive if you turn it off every night. My recommendation is to leave it on, but make sure you have proper energy savers for the screen and hard disks on so it doesn't waste power.
