You also need to consider what the kids are doing !

If they are downloading a lot of stuff hat can affect everybody on your network.

What is the speed of your DSL service?
You have to consider the Bandwidth. Which is being dictated by your DSL speed and the activities you do on the internet. The function of the router is to distribute the bandwidth and the internet connection to all of the computers, equally by default.
Another possible reason is how your kids laptops are connected. If its wireless then distance from where your kids are can be causing the problem. If the slowness is just on their laptops. But if its affecting also the computer which is wired to the router then you might want to consider requesting for a higher DSL speed.

If the kids are using it wireless, could be the distance between the router and the laptops.. If the laptops are wired and still slow, would suggest you download a PC tune up utility and 'clean' the systems.. you should find one in cnet.com or zdnet.com
Thanks

I think the first thing you should try to verify if the signal is strenght enough, because if it is not so the speed will be slow too.

With the router hooked up getting on the internet is slow. hooked to cable one direct it's o.k.

Your Wireless speed is all down to the quality of the router and wireless card, and where you are in relation to the router.
Hooking up direct is always going to be faster.
You could experiment with the position of the router in the room.
Check your speeds wired and wireless, use www.speedtest.net.
You could buy a better antenna for the router

Are you trying to set up router ?
You can set up your router manually, without the CD.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online directly through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem, that means the modem is working fine.
You will need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

If you had it connected by wire, check the side of the computer for a switch. This will torn on your wireless connection.

Wireless connection to the internet

This problem may occurs due improper bandwidth from the service provider or your system may be affected by virus which continuously send data to internet which chock-up the bandwidth. So first report this problem to your service provider that you are not getting proper bandwidth and so you are not able to surf. one more thing you can do to check you bandwidth is goto whatismyip.com and click on speed test and check your bandwidth with any of four server location.

Want to hook laptop up to home computer via cable modem

You need a router or a wireless router to do that.
If your cable modem is wireless you can set directly via wireless network a connection with your laptop (the laptop also need a wireless card (if dont have any built in))
The connection must be done in this way

ISP ----->> Cable Modem ---->> Wireless Router o Router ----->> Computer ( 1, 2, or more)

Motorola WR850G router

Slow speeds is caused by interfearace from cordless phones. 2.4ghz. also could need a power cycle. unplug the power from the back of your dsl modem. unplug the power from your router. shut down your computer. Plug in the modem frist, wait until all lights are green. plug in the router. then when lights are normal on that. turn on your computer. try your connection again. is it slow when you try to acess the router ip address?

3 PC's networked to BEFSX41 very slow accessing internet

sounds like your internet access is the slow down, not the router. You don't say if you have DSL or CABLE or what.  I'd check there. Make sure you are getting a strong signal.  Hook up one system directly, without the router and check the speed.
