Power outage caused c8 / 76 error - No Hot Water

Similar problems as above.. we had a power outage and now the PCB (circuit board) seems to be blown out. The company is sending us a new one, but we have to wait in the meantime without hot water. has anyone else had this problem after a power surge or outage in the area? did you have good luck replacing the board?

How old is your unit...if less than 5 years old tell Polam/Rheem customer support you are recieving a code 76 error - this is a loss of communication between the remote and the burner control assembly. Part will be covered under MF defect warranty. However, the part is covered....the labor to install is not.
If you are slightly technical you can install the part yourself...customer support will walk you through the process and they give you a step-by-step procedure to follow.

Get hot water from your Rheem tankless during a code 76 error

This doesn't always work, but on the Rheem tankless Gas/Propane water heater, if you're experiencing a code 76 error; disconnect the remote control unit (either from the water heater or the remote) by lifting the wires for the remote connection. Typically you'll get a C1-C8 error code, followed by a code 76; if you're getting a straight code 76 and nothing else, this procedure probably won't work.
Code 76 is a total power supply failure on the printed circuit board (PCB) assembly, which is the communication/power supply for the remote control unit. But, if you're getting a supplemental code (C1-C8) this procedure will most likely supply you with hot water until the replacement PCB arrives.

In several cases i have had to change the pcb board.... code 76 is no communication between remote thermostat and pcb..... this is a problem the first generation rheems seem to be having.... contact rheem if under warranty you will need to get pcb and program chip sent to you. Really need a experienced tech to install board and program it for you...... hope this helps...

Error code c7 76 disconnected remote started heater had hot water for a few minutes then back to original problem. No hot water.

Open following link for useful troubleshooting information:

Error code 11 is 'No ignition'

Ensure you have gas to the appliance.
Ensure gas type and pressure are correct.
Bleed all air from gas lines.
Ensure gas line, meter, and regulator are sized properly.
Ensure appliance is properly grounded.
Check gas solenoid valves for open or short circuits.
Ensure igniter is operational.
Check igniter wiring harness for damage.

Error code 12 is 'Flame Failure'
Ensure you have gas to the appliance.
Ensure gas type and pressure are correct.
Bleed all air from gas lines.
Ensure flame rod wire is connected.
Check flame rod for carbon build-up.
Ensure gas line, meter, and regulator are sized properly.
Ensure appliance is properly grounded.
Check gas solenoid valves for open or short circuits.
Check power supply for loose connections.
Check power supply for proper voltage and voltage drops.
Disconnect remote control.
Disconnect and re-connect all wiring harnesses on unit and PC board.
Ensure proper venting material was installed.
Ensure condensation collar was installed properly.
Ensure maximum vertical vent length does not exceed allowable limits.
Ensure maximimum horizontal vent length does not exceed allowable limits.

Range of causes are part failure, gas pressure loss, air in gas line, improper installation of gas line or vent, 120V power to unit is disrupted or unit not grounded, circuit problems, venting problems, remote control, wiring to PC board, board failure, carbon build-up on flame rod, short circuits on gas valve solenoids.
The fact that you have error code tends to eliminate your plumbing as culprit, the error code does not mention air supply, otherwise it looks like every possible cause is on the table.

yes if your not getting power to the element then the circuit board might be bad or the main power has blown a breaker.

I am waiting for circuit board part to be delivered. I have tried to disconnect wires from behind remote control (didnt work). Is there any other way to jump start hot water until my part arrives?

If you open the cover and look at the PCB ther're four capacitors on the left hand side of the board - If the tops of thos caps are slightly raised...ther're blown - you'll have to replace them to get the unit to work.

Parts are available at radio shack or Allied Electronics - or you could find a supplier in your area.

To replace the caps 1)Unplug/remove A/C power. 2)Label and remove all electrical connections to the PCB and remove the PCB from the water heater unit. 3)With the PCB sitting on a flat surface...rotate PCB until the single silver screw is in the top left corner (the caps in question should be in the mid portion of the PCB and on the lefthand side facing the board. 4)Remove the screw from the top left corner...firmly hold the plastic case containing the PCB and gently start bending the plastic case back, until the silicone protectant starts to separate from the plastic on all four sides. Once you have the silicone separated the PCB should pop out of place with some gentle nudging. 5)Remove the protectant from around the caps and remove from the associated area on the back as well. 6) De-solder and replace caps (2 ea/670X25V and 2 ea./220X35V) - available at electronics supplier.

I am having the same problem as posted by jek01 on Aug 1, my Rheem Tankless Hot Water Heater is not powering off, after two years of use with no issues. I also have to turn the breaker off and wait a short...

Remove power source from the unit. If remote control2.gif is installed; remove cover and lift the control wires on the terminal...can be accomplished from either end.

Restore power and see if unit functions normally.

Contact Paloma/Rheem customer (800-432-8373) support and notify them IF you are getting a code "76" error. Rheem has recently extended the warranty on the "Burner Control Assm."; which is your problem. The C4-C8 portion of the error code, is where the unit stops the ignition process...burner fails to light, or gives you intermittent hot water. In either case, contact customer support2.gif.

Paloma heater shuts off

I've installed a number of these units and the C4 76 error code is a bad PCB board. The remote unit is not communicating with the PCB board so you need to call customer service at 800 432 8373. You'll need to give them your name, address, model number and serial number. They'll send you a new PCB board with instructions on how to swap it out. It's pretty easy.
Meanwhile, you might be able to get hot water while you wait the day or two for the replacement parts to arrive by simply disconnecting the wires from the remote at the PCB board. This works about 50% of the time. Once they're disconnected try turning on the hot water full blast and see if the unit fires.
