You cant...you will lose operating system. xp will not work on fat32 partition...AND xp is meant to run on NTFS system...just buy the external hard drive..they are cheap nowadays...i got one for 139 bucks....and store all my stuff on it and leave my 320 g hdd open for whatever then archive it onto the 1tb when i need to.

NTFS is big files and folders. FAT 32 has its limits. Maybe it is but, disconnect everything during setup and installing. I mean everything except keyboard and mouse and master cd/DVD.

The only way to change from NFTS to FAT32 is formating the hard disk.
You will have to install everything again after format it.

I need to replace the (failed) HD with a Seagate 80GB which is currently formatted FAT32. Is this OK or do I need to reformat as NTFS? Using WinXP

I'd use NTFS but you can make up your own mind here....

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/choosing_between_ntfs_fat_and_fat32.mspx?mfr=true

If you have old computers that need to access files on yours go FAT or FAT32. If you intend to or would like to add huge hard drives in the future (over 2 TB) go NTFS.

Humax pvr can not read my maxtor 500gb harddrive why is that?

NTFS
1)allows access local to w2k w2k3 XP win NT4 with SP4 & later may get access for somefile.
2)Maximum size of partition is 2 Terabytes & more.
3)Maximum File size is upto 16TB.
4)File & folder Encryption is possible only in NTFS.
FAT 32
1)Fat 32 Allows access to win 95 98 win millenium win2k xp on local partition.
2)Maximum size of partition is upto 2 TB.
3)Maximum File size is upto 4 GB.
4)File & folder Encryption is not possible.

I hope this clears things up for you

Hi i got gx270 and i made a bootable acronis disk director on a flash so i can format ntfs to fat 32 as i tried before to install win xp from a flash drive but got a stop message sayin i should check...

First of all I have to ask why you are trying to load FAT32 instead of NTFS. NTFS is the preferred file system for all Operating Systems after Windows 2000. Also, you cannot format the hard drive through the Windows XP installation for larger than a 32 GB partition. If you need a larger partition, I suggest using a floppy drive with the3 WinME bootdisk loaded on it. You can get it here:
Try the WinMe bootdisk from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

If the above is not the issue than we can move forward with other solutions.

Good Luck,

I want convert ntfs to fat 32

the convertion from ntfs to fat32 will result in loss of all data in the drive (all data from desktop,my documents, installed programmes.......). You can do this using your windows disc . Just set the primary boot device to be cd-rom in the bios, boot with windows cd in drive, then the installation will guide you to the insallation of a fresh copy of windows (there you can select the required file system).it is recomended to continue with ntfs

I formatted my 1TB usb drive into ntfs want it back to fat32

If this is your bootable drive that windows in installed on you will need to completely reinstall windows to convert it back to FAT 32. If this is a spare drive then you can right click the drive in My computer and go to format and then reformat it as Fat 32.

I have a hard drive with windows 95 and i am trying to install windows xp professional addition but it comes back saying you can't intall this version of windows on this system

Windows 95 uses the FAT 32 system and uses a boot-up partition that will not recognize a windows xp default system install that uses the NTFS system. You can do it the other way around though, if XP is installed first, or another drive you have with XP on it is the first drive set to boot in your BIOS XP will recognize WIN 95 on its FAT 32 partition and either let you boot from that partition when you first start up your computer or when in XP right clicking a WIN 95 application and setting its properties to run as a Win 95 environment. Solution I would use if I were you would be to download Microsoft's free Virtual PC application from their website and run a full version of WIN 95 in its own virtual environment. Win 95 will run about 10 times faster than it ever would on its own partion if run under XP.
