First of all, make sure the camera is in Auto mode. Rotate the top selector to the "Auto" position. If this didn't help, the camera is still under warranty. If you cannot return the camera for replacement from where you bought it, contact Canon as follows:

http://www.canon.com/

Then select "Support" in the left column, then select your region from the map, then pick your country from the listing. Then select "Customer Care" to look for warranty information and points of contact for authorized service.

This sounds like there is a problem with your camera's shutter mechanism and won't be resolved by changing your settings. You'll have to get your unit serviced by an authorized Canon service center. Hope this helps!

If you've replaced the date battery, then the camera is defective. Being only a month old, first recommend seeing if your retailer will exchange it. If not, Canon will fix for free under warranty. Call 1-800-OK-CANON.

HOW TO DISPLAY DATE AND TIME

I checked the manuals and I believe that the function you want is not available within the camera menus.  The date, time, and lots of other information is included within each file that holds individual pictures.  The software you use to view and edit pictures should show the information to you and may allow you to manually add the date to the picture.  I use Photoshop Elements 6 (Mac) and it will allow me to put the date and time on a picture.  You might consider adding the date and time to the name of the picture file if you want a quick reference to the date and time

Most likely is the auto focus sub mirror retaining pin has broken, not an easy fix but possible if your careful.
Lift the mirror and see if the small mirror behind stays hanging down or lifts up out of the way.
if it stays hanging the pin is broken.
Instructions on how to fix here..
http://www.lotek.nu/misc/EOS_300D_sub-mirror_repair/

the other option is a faulty shutter, Canon say it should be good for 50,000 shots but many fail early with either damage to the vains or broken plastic parts, though usually you will get an error 99, no picture at all or a bright patch part way up. The shutter itself is fairly cheap (around £30 / $60) but you need to take the camera down further than the instructions above to replace it..

If you do decide to attempt a repair YOU MUST TAKE THE BATTERIES OUT AND LEAVE THE CAMERA FOR SEVERAL DAYS FIRST.
The flash capacitor is big on these and if you get too close to the flash transformer its likely to arc, giving you a hell of a shock and trashing the camera. It needs this time to discharge.
You can see it in image 21&22 of the instructions and you do have to handle it.

Best of luck

Lens does not retract in play back mode

Never buy a Canon camera again. I have the same problem, and sorry that nobody has a solution. This is the worst of the 3 Canon digitals I have purchased. Lack of a view finder makes it impossible to preview shot when outside on a bright day.

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:
