Chainsaw Mcculloch 310 powermac not running

Hi obwhon, Many thanks for your answer, I tried as you said, but its still not running. I got the filter off and it didnt look too bad, a bit orange but seemed ok, gave it a clean and I put it back in, also emptied the petrol tank. What is happening is the motor starts, it runs 2 or 3 seconds the blade starts to turn very slightly but the throttle on the handle doesnt seem to rev the engine and it peters out. The cable inside the plastic throttle cable is pulling the level ok when the throttle is pressed. The casing around the 3 screws and the choke and choke release has broken and come away. In fact the choke release has come off (but it has been worknig without this) And there seems to be a bit of dirt acumulated around. Im not sure what I can do. Any other tips would be gratefully recieved.
Kind regards and thanks for your time.
Jon

original problem:
Hi, I have a Mcculloch chainsaw Powermac 310. It has not been used for a while but I have had it running but now (i had to dismantle the handle to fix the throttle cable) the motor starts ok but then it just peters out after a few seconds without the chain moving around at all. Any one have any tips would be gratefully recieved. Regards Jon, Spain

original answer:
If it's been sitting a while chances are the fuel is contaminated or has water in it and the same is probably true with the fuel filter. Many chainsaws have the filter on the end of the fuel line inside the fuel tank. See if you can fish it out of the tank and replace the filter put in new fuel and try running it again.

Hi carlbiz, I tried starting it without the air filter in but it still cut out, maybe the motor lasted 1 second more than before. To dismantle a carb is there any manuals on that? as the chainsaw I have is missing its manual. Cheers, Jon

Take the entire saw to a good full service chainsaw shop. Most will diagnose it free. A tune up may be all that is needed. Running it to lean will cause it to fail. $ 40 - 50 for a tune up is considerably cheaper than replacement. Your local Stihl dealer is almost always manned by fully trained mechanics. Not all lawn mower shops are.

Change the air filter.. Try starting it without the air filter in.. See if it will run..

If it sat for a long time the fuel will shellac in the carb and cause it to not work the way it is supose to..
In these cases the carb would need to be cleaned and rebiult...

Good luck

    Jon;

I would think that the esiest way to handle this is - take the carb of.. Should only be a few bolts..

Then bring the carb to a small eng repair shop or lawn mower repair shop and let them rebuild the carb.. Then you dont have to deal with replacing seats and gaskets yourself - wondering if you got them all.. It should not cost much at all and will give you piece of mind ;o)

    Cheers !

Are you sure you have conected the pipes the correct way round, the fuel hose from the tank with the filter on the end goes to the main fuel inlet on the carb, nearest to the alloy pump cover, the other conection off the carb goes to the shorter conection on the back of the primer, the longer pipe on the primer goes back to the tank, just remember the primer pulls fuel from the carb, into the bulb, and back to the tank.

How to test magnito on McCulloch 310 chainsaw

The only way to test an ignition module on any small engine is on the machine. Simple and easy.First remove the spark plug , then remove the wire that connects the module to the kill switch, its located right next to the plug wire above the laminations. Put a spark tester in the pkug boot and ground the other end. Pull the rope and look for a spark. Its that simple. If you have a spark, check the switch and wire, if you dont, check the grounding screws that hold the module to the block for a clean contact. If you still have no good spark its time to replace the Ignition module (coil). If you dont have a spark tester, ask someone dumb enough to hold it. If they jump and cuss you out you know you have a good spark

Mcculloch 310 oil mix ratio

The proper gas/oil ratio is 50:1, that is 50 parts gas, to one part (2) cycle oil.

If you plan on leaving gas in the tank when not being used, I always recommend adding some gas stabilizer, such as Sta-bil, which makes starting the chain saw easier regardless of how long the fuel mix has been sitting in the tank or saw (up to 2 years according to Sta-bil label)

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!
