You should not need any drivers and the drive should be seen fine.

If it is brand new and un-formatted you would need to do that first but there is other information below that should also help out.

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section

Hi ,
I'm afraid your drive is damaged .
The best way I can think to recover your data is to extract the HDD from it's box ( box will be lost ) and connect the drive directly inside your desktop .
You could also try a recovery tool , from here for instance

I want to have xp on my vista gateway laptop

Hello, Its really hard to downgrade from vista to XP on dell laptops. vista and XP use completely different drivers and dell has stopped writing drivers for XP. But still you can downgrade. You need to setup external SATA harddrive from where your XP CD should boot as it wont boot from your current harddrive that has vista. Even if you set these up and downgrade, Since dell has stopped writing drivers your new XP will not work with many new softwares and applications as you wont have drivers for them. I would advice you to use Vista. Good luck, Please rate the solution. ~regards, Jegan

Problem with My Briefcase in Windows Vista

Hello, I thought Vista was retired some time ago through being a little unreliable. Now as far as Windows XP even though it was an old favorite there is no comparison in what it did and Windows 10, I have both a Surface Pro 4 tablet computer and a desktop both have Windows 10. I do wonder why people stay with even XP as it is not supported by Microsoft now and that in itself is a great risk. Thanks.

Lock folder on External HDD

The best way is to use an encryption software. This will encrypt the folder and lock it via a password no matter what user/system tries to access it. WinRAR, and WinZIP also offers some encryption techniques. The best I've used was actually an updated windows folder encryption program.

If you're running a higher version of windows vista (business or ultimate) you could use the software that comes with windows to encrypt the folders. Though, I'd suggest looking around at different applications on the internet. www.google.com is the best place to start. If you have any questions on certain types of applications I can help with that later on. However, I'd suggest at least a 128bit encryption application as the encryption is very difficult to break. :)

Hope this helps bud!
