Unless you are running anything less than windows 98 you should not need drivers. This is a generic case that I also have.

Be aware that some older smaller drives will not work with many of these cases. If its not an onlder drive read below it mya help you out

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section

Jumper settings to connect to mac

If the hdd is a 3 1/2" version you need a power supply to run it. The usb will only power a mini SATA 2 1/2 or smaller as the 3 1/2 needs 12volt supply as well.

I need the driver for this

You need to specify what operating system you are running when you ask for drivers for something.

Most USB based enclosures do not need special drivers if you are running Windows XP, or newer. If you are running Windows, go into Disk Management and make sure the drive is formatted. If the drive doesn't show up in there, then go into the Device Manager and see if the device is listed anywhere in there.

After replace the electric meter outside, the

The meter replacement shouldn't cause hard disk recognition problems. If it powers up, it should be recognised and need no drivers, since it's a standard USB block device, supported natively by XP and later, Mac OS and most Linux distributions.

Why did they had to replace the meter? If anything odd happened to the electrics, it may well be that the MyBook got its electronics damaged. In that case you won't be able to access your data directly: you'll have to extract the hard disk from its plastic enclosure, and place it into another, intact USB enclosure (any enclosure will do, basically. Only verify whether it's a EIDE disk - four big power pins, 2-3 inch rectangular data slot with lots of pins - or SATA - two small slots vaguely L-shaped, about 1 inch wide - and get the appropriate type of enclosure).

Computer doesn't recongize the external hard drive anymore; only comes up as a USB and want to install software which it can't access.

If the drive only shows up as a USB device then one of three things is wrong:

1. Your computer is suffering from a driver issue, to test this simply plug the drive into a different computer, if it works fine there report back and I will give you a hand figuring out why it doesn't work on yours. If it doesn't proceed to step two.

2. The enclosure may be faulty. Take the drive enclosure to your local PC shop, have them extract the drive from the enclosure and place it in a new enclosure to test it. If it work buy the enclosure and report back. If it doesn't, procede to step three.

3. If step 1 + 2 both failed, the hard drive itself is damage and you will need the help of a pro to recover any data on it, report back with your location(Country, City, State) and I will be happy to pass along a few recommendations.

Hope this helps FixYa,
