Re: hard drive install

Could really use a lot more information, but to start you might
check your bios first to see if your computer is recognizing the HD, (XP will try to install just using RAM). Make sure your drive jumpers are set properly. Master, slave or CS?

Ntlrd missing xp tablet on my hp tc1000 with no cd rom

  1. Computer is booting from a non-bootable source.
  2. Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS.
  3. Corrupt NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM file.
  4. Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file.
  5. Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is using FAT32.
  6. New hard disk drive being added.
  7. Corrupt boot sector / master boot record.
  8. Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
  9. Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable.
  10. Failing to enable USB keyboard support in the BIOS.

Computer is booting from a non-bootable source

Many times this error is caused when the computer is attempting to boot from a non-bootable floppy disk or CD-ROM. First verify that no floppy diskette or CD is in the computer, unless you are attempting to boot from a diskette.

Note: This error has also been known to occur when a memory stick is in a card reader and the computer is attempting to boot from it. If you have any card reader or flash reader make sure that no memory stick is inside the computer. Additionally disconnect all USB drives, cameras, ipods, iphones, etc. from the computer.

If you are attempting to boot from a floppy diskette and are receiving this error message it is likely that the diskette does not have all the necessary files or is corrupt.

If you are attempting to install Windows XP or Windows 2000 and are receiving this error message as the computer is booting verify that your computer BIOS has the proper boot settings. For example, if you are attempting to run the install from the CD-ROM make sure the CD-ROM is the first boot device, and not the hard disk drive.

Second, when the computer is booting you should receive the below prompt.

Press any key to boot from the CD

Important: When you see this message press any key such as the Enter key immediately, otherwise it will try booting from the hard drive and likely get the NTLDR error again.

Note: If you are not receiving the above message and your BIOS boot options are set properly it's also possible that your CD-ROM drive may not be booting from the CD-ROM properly. Verify the jumpers are set properly on the CD-ROM drive.

Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS

Verify that your computer hard disk drive is properly setup in the CMOS setup. Improper settings can cause this error.

Working on a friends laptop, the hard drive shows in bios but when trying to format it with windows xp it says there is no hard drive installed, it booted to the welcome screen before

Are you using the Fujitsu-supplied Windows XP Installation Media, or a "generic" Windows XP CD-ROM?

The "generic" version may be lacking the device-drivers for the SATA disk-drive,
and therefore cannot "find" the disk-drive.

Trying to install XP when disk selection comes up it reads, "Unkown disk. There is not disk in this drive". NOt sure what that means.

your drive is not being read,
have you set BIOS to boot from CD ROM,
is your CD ROM working,
is your XP CD working

Do the following
1 go to BIOS and re-set to BOOT from CD ROM
2 use another copy of XP/Win98/Vista etc to verify if CR ROM is reading the CDs else...
if you doubt CD ROM drive has a problem....
3 use a USB external CD ROM, and to do that u need to re-set the BIOS to boot from USB CD ROM

I have used my maxtor 8 as a slave. I now wish to use it as a normal drive. My attempts to install XP produces an indication that NTLDR is not present. I have managed to start the installation program but...

If you had it set to slave status, there is a jumper on the drive controller next to where the cable plugs into. that jumper needs to be set to the correct position. typically there are 3 jumper positions Master, Slave, and Cable Select. If this is the only drive in the system, you can set it to master or cable select position. If there are multiple drives, then every drive needs to be set to cable select.
The diagram on the drive label should tell you which jumper is cable select position.

Erased hard drive, now nothing will load

Check to make sure that your Inspiron is set to boot from the CD-ROM drive.

It sounds like your laptop is trying to boot from the (now erased) hard drive first, finds that it can't, then stops without ever checking the CD-ROM drive for boot media.

At startup, hit F2 to go into the BIOS settings. Look for the "Boot Order" section. Make sure that your CD drive is listed first, then your hard drive.

Save your changes, and reboot with the WinXP installation CD in your drive. Now your laptop should boot from the CD and begin installation.

Good Luck!
