Re: install hard drive

If you're saying your computer will not boot from the CD, you may need to boot and enter the BIOS setup and select thd CDROM as a boot device.

Windows will not start with a Toshiba external hard drive plugged into USB

Computer starts normally in windows with a windows that is installed on a hard disk on that copmuter. In other words - windows is installed on an internal hard disk of a computer A. If you get it out and put in a computer B it wont work.

To have the things work:
1. First should set in BIOS boot up options first boot device CD/DVD, second OTHER/USB/EXTERNAL, third HDD
2. Should boot up from a CD and install windows on an external hard disk (in your case your 3TB Toshiba external HD)
3. Set in BIOS boot up options first boot device OTHER/USB/EXTERNAL, second internal hard disk e.g. HDD0, HDD1

In doing a system restore i managed to wipe out windows in my el1852w the screen says, install windows..X Windowscould not complete the install windows on this computer restart...

As PC starts watch screen for message "to enter setup press del" or similar. (press F!, press F2, press F12).Power down the PC and then power it back up. Be ready to press the KEY to enter setup while message is on screen. If you do not see the "enter setup" try holding the delete key as machine powers up.
Then repeat while holding F1 key etc. Once you enter setup (CMOS SETUP) find the boot settings and select CD as first boot drive. Put your full install CD in the CD drive have the license code ready. Example; AB123-1RD5C-XP94D-MN47G-LRIPQ. Your key will be on the CD sleeve or license sticker on PC. With install CD in drive power PC up. The PC should boot from the install CD. Do a full install on C drive. This should format your C drive erasing everything on drive C. Format with NTFS (new technology file system). During install the PC will restart a few times. At one point it will require you to type in license code. About half way thru install you will be instructed to remove all disks from drives, at this point you enter setup (CMOS) again and change from boot from CD as first choice TO boot from HD and second choice boot from CD. If you can not complete install you may have a hardware problem. GIVE plenty of time for each install step. Install may appear to have stopped but it will continue when it has completed that step.

It sounds as if the SMART measurements on your Seagate 320GB hard drive are triggering the Windows message advising that the drive is failing.

You would be best advised to backup your data from this drive to a different drive or on to DVD media (depending on how much data is involved).

To test the failing Seagate disk, download a copy of Hiren's Boot CD which is a CD image file (.ISO) and must be burnt to a blank CD disc - then boot the computer with the failing disk from this CD - then select DOS Programs on the initial menu, then choose Hard Disk Tools and then HDAT2 - this is a tool which will let you try to recover any bad sectors on your boot disk.

On the Hard Disk Tools menu there is also a SMARTUDM - HDD S.M.A.R.T. viewer which will let you examine exactly which areas of the Seagate disk are giving the problem leading to the failure message.

Mine hitachi hard disk is 80GB SATA i cant able to install OS because it is showing error some virus found and u r not able to formate this. first when i put OS CD in drive it will install some files and...

The problem is that XPinstallation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on adisk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then,XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS anddisable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is aIDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows hasbeen installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver),then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

Hard Drive

Hi I use Maxtor HD's and IBM Deskstars also, one of my pc's has 4 500 gb SATA drives [not in raid mode] and have had some problems also.
If you are using 2 drives then one should be set as master and one as slave. Same thing goes for cd/dvd roms, master and slave, and use 80 wire ribon cables. If you are using just one drive and the settings in your bios, and master or slave and what drive boots up the machine.
if using only 1 drive set it to master [in SATA it does not matter you can leave them all as masters, and only if the cd.dvd's are SATA also, if not they have to be set up as master & slave, set the bios to boot from cd drive 1st 2nd is your HD and last is if you still use them a floppy. On boot with the OS CD in the drive boot the pc and it will start the instalation of windows, delete any partitions, format the drive [NTFS] NOT FAT OR FAT32, and you should be able to do a fresh instal. As with 2nd hand drives as they were used on another pc they have hidden files left on the drive [unless the person that gave it to you has prepared the drive to do a proper instal if not windows gives you the option to delete, create and format the drive, to be ready to continue to instal windows.

To re-install XP over it's self. Put the CD in your cdrom drive. Start the system & press the F5 key every 2 seconds. This will load a boot menue. Using your keyboards up & down arrow keys highlit the cdrom drive & press enter. You will see to boot to the cd press any key, press the space bar. XP will start to load. Choose the correct options for a re-install.

Installing Hard Drive on Dell 8300

I am assuming that you are installing the Western Digital WD2500SB as a second Hard Disk in your Dell 8300. If it is connected along the same flat IDE cable as you old/original HD (Primary Master), you need to move the jumper in the WD for it to be as the Primary Slave. Instructions and illustrations are normally printed on the sticker atop the HD. If you are connecting it to the 2nd (Secondary) IDE, pls verify that it is not in conflict to any other device attached to it such as your CD/DVD. At any time, only 1 can be a master and the second device be the slave.

To verify that indeed your wiring/jumper and settings are correct, you can go to BIOS/CMOS setup immediately after powerup and determine if your PC has auto detected the new HD as well as the old/original HD & CD/DVD.

If for wahtever reason, the PC will not auto detect the new (Western Digital WD2500SB) HD and since it is new then, it should still be covered by the warranty and you can ask for a replacement.

If on the other handyou would want it to the the primary master and you would like to run your PC's OS on that new HD, you would need a CD installer/recovery to re-install the operating system.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Hard drive install

Could really use a lot more information, but to start you might
check your bios first to see if your computer is recognizing the HD, (XP will try to install just using RAM). Make sure your drive jumpers are set properly. Master, slave or CS?
