If it is a centre thwart just bolt down through the gunwale with long bolts and large washers.

If it is a lowered kneeling thwart then use the same principle but with longer bolts to accomodate the spacer blocks you use to frop the thwart height.

Remember that you need to get your feet under the kneeling thwart so don't put it too low down or you may trap your legs in the event of a capsize.

How do I adust the seat back to make it not flop around

install an anchor behind the seat or install two of them, located equi-distant from the seat location on both sides but behind. The strap loops on the seat are for nylon straps with buckles. Attach to seat and attach straps in rear to anchors. You'll need pop-rivet tool to attach the anchors and if your seat is decent quality, it should have straps sewn-into it on the edges. Be sure to use a good seat-back with an area of padding to sit yourself onto. Life gets uncomfortable without a padded seat bottom!

I have a coleman canoe about 1978ish model 5907-719 17 ft. I can't find a replacement center thwart. Any ideas?

Post a picture of what it looks like, if you can.

If it was wood, then just make one. Else make a wooden one to fit where the Aluminum would have been. That is the usual thing to do with older boats, and cost-effective.

If you really care about the canoe, seek out an old one for sale "well used" and buy it as a replacement or for parts. An elderly Colman is not worth a lot, so don;t spend a ton on fixing the first one.

Gunwale replacment old town discovery 169

The yoke is easy -- measure the exact length and buy a new one that you find comfortable from your local dealer or outfitter. Just bolt it in place.

The gunwale is a bigger job, and depends on what it is made of, but a discussion with your local Old Town dealer will help figure that out.

I just received the family canoe my husband had when he was little from my sister-in-laws who has kept it in the back yard for the last 12 years. It is in need of some TLC. The paint has wore off in...

Go to a local marine/boat store. They carry fiberglass repair kits for boats that should work on the canoe. There are systems out there that will coat the canoe and make it last a long time. They also have gels that restore the shine to fiberglass that are pretty amazing, but you would not want to put that on before restoring the damaged areas. Using marine-grade plywood would be a good start, but then seal it with a spar varnish in a can to give the wood a long life. The crack in the panel should be sealed as water can collect in that space, hopefully the outside hull only has the cosmetic cracks that can be filled before re-gel coating it or polishing it.

I just purchased a 15 foot Dolphin Canoe. I wanted to get information about it. Its age, parts, etc. Each type of canoe had an native name (chief, princess, etc.).

Those are old rascals! Not really classics, and not going to be valuable some day, so just use it until you can find something you like more.

You might ask some of the old-timers around your local waterways or canoe shops.

Approx 2 wide by 7 inch long gash in starboard side at the waterline

That's a pretty serious size gash to repair. I'd contact Old Town Canoes to see it that material can be plastic welded and if so, where to get the materials. Good luck.

Need a security cable to lock my 16' canoe to a tree. The kayak cables are too short.

With a canoe, you do not need the double loops designed to go around both ends of a kayak. Instead, you can run a cable through at least two of the seats and thwarts and then around the tree or whatever. Do remember that a determined thief can steal almost anything, but if you have a solid tree and loop through several points on the boat you should be OK.
