Why won't the answering machine, when set to 'answer on' not record a message?.It goes to voice mail. Is my machine defective?

Maybe the answering machine is set to pick up at say"5 rings" and the voice mail is set to pickup at "4 rings" . Change the voicemail setting to a higher setting than the answering machine. That may be the problem.

Good day Mickey, First I'll provide you with a link to the manual if you need it: I know it's a weird lokking link, it's a server from thompson which is the parent company for GE home electronics, not exactly yoo east to find. Anyway on to the problem at hand, To make it answer after more rings there is switch on the back of the base. It hase 3 settings 3/5/TS. If set to 3 it will pick up in rings, set it to 5 and it will pick up in 5 rings. The TS setting stands for TollSaver, do not use this setting, TS will cause it to pick up in 2 rings. Set it to 5, however if you want to get 10rings before it picks up there's a little trick. When the answering machine gets full it will start picking up in 10rings, they do this so you know your answering machine is full. You can still leave a meassge even when it's full, it will automatically delete the oldest message to make room for a new one. However the display on the machin will display an F instead of the number of new messages. Well I hope the helps with that problem, because I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that phone has a maximum capability of 10 speed dials (0-9) and that's the max. There are models on the market with lots of speed dials but there usually corded phones. Well Good Luck & I hope this helps. L8R

Hooking up fax to KX TG7871 Panasonic Phone

There is excellent support here on basic fax setups. You have what is known as "Distinctive Ringing Service". There are pros and cons to the various setups. I assume you recognize the rings and answer only when the ring for the landline talk comes on. The fax will pick up the faxes, and the answering machine will pick up the voice.

Need model number of your fax - google that!

Service manual for your phone.
This link shows various configurations of setting up your phone/fax/answering machine or using an answering service.
Distinctive Ringing Service setup While it is not available everywhere, a distinctive ringing service can be purchased from most telephone companies. With this service, more than one phone number is assigned to the same phone line. Each phone number will ring differently. The main number will ring with a normal single ring and the additional number will ring with a distinctive ring pattern assigned by the phone company.
When a distinctive ringing service is used, set the Rings to Answer to 2 and then follow the steps below to set the distinctive ringing pattern:
  1. Press Setup , press 4 , and then press 1 to enter the Answer Ring Pattern setup of the Advanced Fax settings.
  2. Use the Right Arrow to scroll through the available settings. When the ring pattern assigned by the phone company displays (double or triple rings), press OK .

Even though my answering machine indicates it is on, noone can leave a message. The response is that the mailbox has not been set up.Can you help? Thank you.I have had this system for quite a while and have...

A "mailbox not set up" message is coming from your telephone line voice mail system, and not from your telephone answeringmachine. What this means is that the voice mail on the phone line is picking up before the answering machine has a chance, and since the mailbox hasn't been set up it can't take any messages. So there are two things you'll need to do.

First, you'll need to set up your voice mail. You may need to contact your telephone service provider for setup instructions since not all systems are the same, but here's how it usually works. From your home phone, call your own number so you reach your voice mail. You should get the message that your mailbox hasn't been set up, and will be prompted for an access code to get to the setup menu. The access code is usually the last four digits of your phone number, and you'll be prompted to change it to something else as part of the setup. Through the setup main menu you can record your greeting and set up other options like the ring count before the voice mail answers. Set it for a number larger than the setting on your telephone answering machine. (I have my answering machine set to 4 rings, and voicemail set to 6.)

Step two is to verify the ring setting on your answering machine. Four rings is a common default setting, but it's adjustable on the phone. Most newer phones have menus that you access from the handset to set change settings, while older models have a switch on the base unit.

Once the mailbox is set up and you have your answering machine set to pick up first, everything will work as you want.

I have a discontinued phone and have lost the instruction book and need to figure out why the fax machine is not letting the answering machine pick up.

you have both the fax machine and the answering machine on the same phone line.
The fax machine and the answering machine are set to answer in a certain number of rings.
In your case the fax machine is set to answer the line in less rings than the answering machine. You have to increase the number of rings of your fax so that the answering machine will work.

Panasonic 816 phone system

What you need to do is set the number of rings before answer on the phone to a number greater than the number of rings it takes before AT&T answers (for example, set AT&T to answer after 4 rings and the phone to answer after 5). Some phones have switches on them that allow you set the number of rings. Some make you set the number through their software. Look on the body of the phone, particularly the sides, for that switch and set it to the biggest number it offers.
