Question about Panasonic PT-51G44 51" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

Dark picture The picture is dark and I have opened the unit and clean dust out of the inside. I have used the suggested cleaning solution on the screen, but I end up with sharper dark image. I increased the color and contrast to maximum, but dark colors/objects on the screen are black. Are the bulbs the issue? What causes the brightness to diminish? TV is over 10 years old and has been taken care of.

Picture problems

Two things to look at from rear with back off: one is the inside of the screen and or the large mirror in rear of unit--do not touch mirror.

second is the unit has a small lens (2-3 inches) the points up towards the mirror---dust or such on it will cause this--it can be cleaned with a lens cloth.

If the mirror has this (uncommon) the entire front of set would have to be removed (screen units) and that is not real easy.

If lens and mirror and screen are ok problem is INSIDE the optical unit that the lens is part of---on rare occasions that can be cleaned out with compressed air.

without seeing a photo of what it looks like this is all I can suggest.

When you say it is dark do you mean no contrast or some channels are dark while others aren't. While cleaning would certainly not be a bad thing you may also need to increase the crt drives if the unit is several years old. This is normal but unless you are familiar with the unit you could do more harm than good. Cleaning the lenses would be an easy first step. Unplug the unit from the mains. Remove the rear cover. You should be able to see the three lenses. Using a clean soft cloth spay a small amount of general purpose cleaner such as windex on the cloth. Using a circular motion clean each lense being careful not to move any of the focus adjustments on the lense assembly. When you have all three lenses clean reassemble unit and test. If this was your only problem you should have a better picture. If the unit is still too dark you should have a local technician adjust the crt drives. Good luck and be careful!

Mitsubishi WD-62527. Dark picture.

That unit is a two mirror set. Meaning the light engine lens shines down onto a small mirror and that is reflected onto a large mirror and then onto the screen. Gravity being what it is dust and other contaminants cover the lower mirror. Moving the set would only aggrevate dust settling on it. To fix the problem the screen must be removed and the mirror cleaned. You won't believe the difference. It will be like watching a new tv.

Dark Picture

Sorry Don

Smoking absolutely destroys these TVs. Just like Teeth, the smoke gets inside and permenantly yellows the Light Prism. Since the Light Prism is responsible for passing light in these units, the yellowing dims and yellows the picture. There is NO fix for this.

Cleaning these is dangerous since all the parts have either a UV or Polarizing coating on them.

Again, I am sorry but this is the truth. On the other hand, try pressing the "Video" Button to see if one of these settings is any improvement

Dark spots on tv

I have the same TV, and I was getting the black spots on my screen as well. It is dust settling on the bottom mirror. Yoiu can call Mitsubishi and spend 150-200 on getting it cleaned, or you can do like I did and take the front panel off and the 10 screws around the edge on the back of the black plastic border around the screen. Then lift up gently and have someone hold the screen for you and gently dust the bottom mirror. I did this by myself, but it would be wise to have 2 people do it.
