Hello,
Decrease the contrast.
1. Press [2nd] key and release it
2. Press [DownArrow] and release it.
Repeate steps 1 and 2 in sequence till contrast lightens.
Hope it helps.

Screen just went blank - can bearly see a faint box in the screen

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

I was currently using my TI-83 and the screen started showing these crazy symbols. I decided to change the batteries however; the screen now just comes up black or still show crazy symbols. It still...

hi..
this may caused by internal errors. ICs in your calculator must have died.
i think your calculator meets its end of days.. how long you being using this calculator.

The screen is black, and won't change or show anything else, but can still be turned on and off.

I had the same problems and non of the standard fixes worked for me. I try clearing the memory, re-loading the OS, removing the batteries overnight, etc. Removing the batteries helped but only for a few seconds and then it went back to a black screen. I removed the grounding shield (open the calculator and remove two small screws and remove the shield). The calculator now works fine without the shield. It appears that the shield was shorting some of the capacitors. You can always put it back if it does not work!

Cannot graph invalid dim error

This error show up when you are graphing out of the plot menu. If you are not graphing data points from list menu, you need to turn the plots off. In the y= screen, you will see the words plot 1, plot 2, etc across the top of the screen. If one of the plots is highlighted (black box over the words), you need to turn it off. This can be done by arrowing up and highlighting the box and pressing enter. When you arrow back down, the plot should be off and you will be able to enter an equation in the y= lines and graph.

If you are graphing from the plot menu, this error lets you know that one of the lists you are graphing is longer than the other.

Another way to fix the problem is to reset the calculator by pressing 2nd button then plus sign then 7 then 1 then 2. This will reset the calculator however if you are graphing from lists, your data will be erased. Hope this helps.

Cannot find the constant key for multiplication

How to do constant multiplication or division on the Canon P170-DH calculator

This process actually requires fewer keystrokes than most other calculators. Basically, just do the first problem
and then do the next items with just the next number and the EQUAL key. For example,

*** Constant Multiplication ***
2 (multiply key)
10 (= key)
(The answer 20 shows on the screen. Note, the 2 is still stored as a constant without doing anything, just continue)
4 = (shows the answer 8 on the screen)
20 = (shows the answer 40 on the screen)
100 = (shows the answer 200 on the screen)

*** Constant Division ***
10 (divided by key)
2 =
(shows the answer 5 on the screen, the 2 is still stored as a constant without doing anything, just continue)
100 = (shows the answer 50 on the screen)
500 = (shows the answer 250 on the screen)
4 = (shows the answer 2 on the screen)

--------------
Also note! There is no K visible on the screen to indicate a constant is set.
