I have exactly the same problem and have changed the batteries...but to no avail. Heard form someone that this particular batch i.e s500 was produced in China ,which is of an inferior make compared to the other models produced in Japan....the mind boggles... not sure whether this is fixable;-(

Same problem here with my DSC-S500. When the power is

turned on it immediately turns back off. I checked the

battery voltages and they measured 1.5V plus..

Yes I have the same problem, the screen only lights up for a split second, then goes blank, regardless of new batteries or not. camera is only 14 months old, but now out of warranty. I never abused this camera. SONY has some kind of design fault, this happened to me with a previous Cybershot. Unless they make it good again (SONY), without charging me, I will never buy another SONY camera. I will advise everyone else to not buy their cameras too!

If you open the camera up, whick I know is an intricate task, and take the screen down but don't unplug it, at the right bottom their is something that resembles a watch battery, if you can figure out how to get it off and find a replacement it will be fixed... This battery serves a a sort of memory power, even though you have batteries, this battery keeps the memory for the camera's software, so inturn without it the camera is dead in the water. this is fixable!

Do i use usb to charge sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S500?

No. The DSC-S500 uses standard AA batteries, either disposable alkalines or rechargeable NiMHs. If you use rechargeables, they must be charged outside the camera using a separate charger.

It is problem of lens mechanism and only solution is to replace lens assembly. Local camera repair shop will help you to replace lens assembly because it is not user level repair.

Is the camera sony cyber shot dsc s500 a webcam? if so why doesnt it work on my computer

It's not a webcam. It was designed to store images (and videos) to memory, not to stream them live to another device.
