If its hydraulic youll need to bleed the calipers and or lines. You may have an air bubble or low fluid. If its old cable style, theres a cable with a nut near the ends that screws out and tightens the cable by elongating the cable distance thus adjusting it.

I have a 1998 Monte Carlos. I had to slam on the brakes the ABS light and brake lights are on. What could it be. They were fine before I had to slam on my brakes to avoid a car in front if me.

You have a brake fluid pump on board that over rides high pressure to keep the wheels from locking up by openning a bypass valve. If you can lock up the wheels by hitting the brakes hard the valve is stuck :( very costly. If they dont lock its electrical if they do you just wont have ABS. This is something that was passed on to me so i drove without ABS car stopped fine.

96 front passenger side brake line at booster into spliter witch one is front right brake line

1996 on the master cyclinder the 2 connections are the one in the back part of the master cylinder is the primary circuit that is the front brake section and the one farthest from the back of the rear of the master cylinder is the secondary which will go to the rear of the brakes. Now this is going to look confusing as it attaches to a combination valve, why it is because you have a diaginal split this is design for brake hydraulic failure. Now when you get everything installed make sure you bleed the system. make sure your pedal is firm if it stop funny and the rear lock up reverse it the front is where you want all braking power the rear only slowly engages and not that quick it is designed that way so you stop in a straight position the rear brake keep you straight they dont realy stop the vehicle.

1998 ford escort se hand brake need adjusting. doesn't hold.

Try to adjust the rear brakes tighter at the shoes, if you have drum brakes. May require taking the drum off and adjusting the adjuster. Or, adjusting it from the backing plate access hole if there is one.

Be sure to check the cables to make sure they are not broken anywhere between the hand brake lever and the back brakes.

Good luck on this repair.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the brake drum.
  4. Using a brake adjusting gauge, measure the inside diameter of the brake
  5. Compare the brake drum measurement to the brake shoes.
  6. Adjust the brake shoes by inserting a brake adjustment tool into the knurled
quadrant of the rear quad operating lever and adjust the shoes to the same
    measurement as the brake drum.
  7. Install the brake drum.
  8. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Check the brake system operation by making several stops while driving
    slowly forward.

if your pards and rotors are fine, then maybe you need to bleed your brakes and/or to replace the brake fluid. how dirty it is? how is the level of it?

you could have a brake booster issue. you can do a simple test on another car by leaving the engine off and press the brake repeatedly 3 or four times will use up the vacuum in the brake booster. Once you have done this does it feel like the brake pedal in your van?
