When I try to access a file on my WD MYBOOK it freezes my comp

When I try to access a file on my WD MYBOOK it freezes up my computer, specifically Windows Explorer. I tried Gyula Navigator but it just freezes it as well. I did get one error message stating a I/O problem.

    I've tried my drive on 4 different computers including a Mac, and yet none worked. I tried a different power cable from an identical drive just to rule out a poor power supply. Listening to the drive as it starts up, I hear the drive trying to fire up and then wind back down. It repeats this process until I unplug it. At this point a power shut down doesn't even work. I have yet to try a different housing for the drive. That will most likely come next. Most of my IT friends are all pointing to the actual drive as the cause. If that be the case, then I might need to take it to one of the Pros you spoke of. I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma USA. Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

I/O problems generally indicate hardware problems in your computer, the USB circuitry of the drive enclosure or the circuitry of the drive insode the enclosure.

First try the drive on a different computer, if it works the problem is in your PC, if it fails, take the drive to your local PC shop and ask the techs to move you hard drive into a new enclosure and test it, if it works the problem is in your enclosure, buy the one they tested it in and you're good to go again. If neither works the issue is in the actual hard drive and you will need the help of a pro to get your data back, if this is the case reply with your location(Country, State and City) and I will refer you to an appropriate facility to help you get your files back.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

    Thanks for the additional info. Sounds like you've tried the majority of the usual tricks. Try the new enclosure and cross your fingers. If that fails I would recommend either sending it to CBL in New York State or Armor-IT in Saskatchewan, Canada.

    CBL is closer to you and as such will be faster but starts about $600-$700, Armor-IT will take a bit longer but averages about $400-$500, for 60% of their quotes. Let me know which you would prefer and you email in the form myemailathotmaildotcom so our privacy filters will let it through and I will have a ticket opened for you at the appropriate facility.

I dont know if it's my computer or the mybook, but when i plug it into the computer its not popping up...but the blue light is on, and it make sound effect that i put somthing into the computer

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

My wd 1tb mybook no longer powers up-I have archived versions of these files but i would prefer to get the data off this drive

Is it still under warranty?

Possibilities:
* try connecting to a different USB port on your computer
* try connecting to a USB port on a different computer
* try a different USB cable between the computer and the MyBook
* disassemble the casing, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a "slave" drive in some desktop computer, to see if the files on the disk-drive are intact

If all else fails, search online for "professional data recovery service" -- a company that will repair the MyBook just long enough to copy all your files onto a new disk-drive. Of course, this is _expensive_.

Note that Western Digital has a Customer Loyalty Program -- knowing the serial-number on your disk-drive, you can buy a new MyBook from their web-site, at a good discount.

You may be able to remove the hard drive manually and try another USB adapter to access it on your computer.

Might be pootched though.

Rule of thumb is to never save your files to only 1 source. Its not a question of if a hard drive is going to fail but WHEN.

I just drop my WD external hard disk (Please help)

When you drop your hard drive for more than a few inches, you just have to face the fact that the HD is dead, period. If for some miracle the drive still works, then it's the work of Jesus/Shiva/whatever deity of your choice. I'm sorry I can't offer anything more constructive. See Myth 24 on this page:
