A business card placed between the flywheel and module works quite well (the magnetic attraction even holds it in place).and is easy. Rotate it by hand when done to ensure there is no contact. HTH

Can't get a spark on Stihl 020 chainsaw. Tried another coil and switch module but still no spark

It is possible your flywheel has lost it's magnet strength, if you noticed it turn a blue. Can take off flywheel and replace with a good one. Or you can play with the gap on the magneto/coil, and insert a piece of paper between the coil and the flywheel magnets, to set for air gap.

Stihl ms 361

Make sure the wire going to the kill switch is insulated (no missing insulation) and not pinched the case. Test the switch to see if the contacts are open with the switch in the run postion.

My 5 hp briggs stopped running. No spark. took recoil off to reveal a rotten coil with wires rotted off. cleaned off the flywheel and replaced the coil with one from Napa. The engine does not have points...

Did you set the Air Gap correctly, it should be .020 inch. If the Air Gap is correct and you cleaned the pickup magnets, you should be getting spark. I have different color coded plastic sheets of the correct thickness to set the Air Gap on different engines. You could use a use a side panel from a plastic soda bottle (Mt Dew, Pepsi, ect) Place it between the Flywheel and the Armature/Ign Coil. Allow the magnets on the Flywheel to pull the Armature/Ign Coil together and then tighten the Armature/Ign Coil bolts. Carefully turn the Engine while pulling the plastic from between the Armature/Ign Coil Pickups. The Armature/Ign Coil is now properly set.

Generall speaking for a gasoline engine to run you need 3 things. (1) Spark, (2) Gas and (3) Air.

I hope this is helpful. UAW 974

Clearance for stihl ms 250 ignition coil

Rotate the flywheel until the magnets are under the module, insert a thin business card into the pole gaps, loosen the module screws and allow the module to contact the magnets. Tighten the screws and rotate the flywheel somewhat to release the card. Turn the flywheel one full turn to make sure the pole gaps don't close further. Hope this helps!

My chainsaw wont start! I replaced the spark plug and added fresh gas .It acts like it wants to start but doesnt I even sprayed the carb out with carb cleaner any ideas?

Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Check the condition of all fuel lines. Does the primer bulb fill with fuel when pumped several times? Check the spark at the plug (gapped at 0.020") which should be blue and snappy. If weak looking, you may need to reset the ignition module gap to the flywheel magnets with a thin business card for a gauge. Remove the left side case to expose the flywheel and ignition module. Turn the flywheel to bring the magnets under the ignition module, insert the card into the pole gaps, loosen the module screws to allow the module to contact the magnets, then re-tighten the screws. Turn the flywheel one full turn and watch the gaps to make sure the flywheel doesn't contact the module. Recheck for spark. Hope this helps!

Poulan 295 model chainsaw/ won't start, no spark

Start first with a fresh spark plug set at 0.020" gap. Make sure ignition switch is on. If still nothing, remove the cover from the flywheel. Set the ignition module gap by using a thin business card between the module poles and the flywheel magnets. Loosen the mounting screws, let the module contact the magnets, and re-tighten the screws. Turn the flywheel to remove the card, then rotate the flywheel on full turn checking that the gap doesn't close-up any further. Check for spark again--if still nothing, remove the ignition switch wire from the ignition module. Check for spark--if spark now occurs, check the condition of the ignition switch or the connecting wire may be grounding out somewhere in between. If still nothing, replace the ignition module. Hope this helps!

Weak spark hard start stihl 021

Check the pole gap on the ignition module to the flywheel magnets. Use a thin business card for a gauge. If it has the correct gap and you have tried a new spark plug, then the module itself is likely failing. Hope this helps!

No spark

leave your killswitch wire not hooked up and try?
check the flywheel key way and be sure it is aligned perfectly with the key way on the crankshaft
if it is you are in time
if not its out of time (timing off)
since it didnt work with the air gap at .014 go closer and set at .012 and see what happens
be sure to adj. the air gap at the magnet part of the flywheel and ign. module and secure module at a setting you want
