Question about Onkyo Audio Players & Recorders

2 Answers

I have an Onkyo TX-SR 797 and TX-SR800. On both systems I have the audio output from my cable box coming into Optical 3 which is associated with Video 3. Both were working fine but I dusted the Onkyo 800 this morning and now I am not getting any sound when I select Video 3. In addition the display panel has Analog displayec about the Video 3 text. On the 797 the word digital is displayed above the Video 3 text. I still get sound when I listen to a DVD through the 800. Can you help me?

It is a digital connection and I checked both ends since, as you mentioned, I might have loosened one while dusting. The connection was tight at both ends. I checked the settings for assignment of inputs and that was OK.

You know there is a lot of menus and presets. Not sure if you can get into the display and the remote has a lot of settings too. And any one preset or settings could be missing you up. After checking again to make sure that even the remote isn't missing you up. Check mute bottons too. Then, I would unplug and disconnect for about 30 min and then reconnect and go back though it all.

Audio is not heard or audio from different source is
heard.

My onkyo different but, you probably have more fuses too that you might want to check. Just trail and error to figure problem on this one.

If all that is ok then can you take the cover off and check fuses? You are sure that there is optical audio coming from the receiver. I know you have 2 receivers and you probably did already check, I'm just making sure. I just don't want to say its blown or bad because they are so nice. I can't see how you could have blown it, dusting.

I would first start by checking all the connections as this happed while dusting. Chances are something has come loose (optical cable or video left=white/right=red) more then likely an audio cable either on either end or the components. If both are connected then check the settings to insure none of them have disconnected.

Try unpludding the cables and plggging back in after unplugging the units for about 45seconds. It kinda odd that they worked fine and then stopped after dusting...

I have a sony bravia TV with an optical audio out. I have plugged the optical cable from the tv out and into the DVD optical 1 input and receive no sound? I have setup the audio to optical 1 and still not...

Most of the old Sony TVs released before 2007 has an issue with its optical output. only when you use a direct cable connection to its VHF/UHF input, the optical outputs audio. Otherwise, you have to stick on the A/V connection to receive the TV audio though sound system. Please get back to me with the model # of the TV so that I can check whether the TV comes under the category.
Thanks for understanding.

[TX-DS595] My Video 1 stopped working, no audio, (Right before the super bowl!) yet I get audio on DVD & Tuner. What could be the problem? Thanks, Ira S. Cohen

Well, what's on Video 1 and is IT okay?

You don't say if you're using the analog audio associated with Vid 1 or if you have digital audio coming in and assigned to Vid 1. Check the cables. If using the optical, make sure it has no small-radius bends.

If analog audio, try another input - video 2 or 3.

If you have Cable/SAT TV as the source, what's going on with ITS audio settings?

You can always run that RCA cable pair from the source to theTV as a test for audio, too.

No picture from monitor out on Onkyo TX-DS898

I realize you may have already doubled checked but make sure you follow this from the manual:
If the satellite tuner / cable box is equipped with an S video output
terminal, connect it to the S VIDEO 3 (or 4) IN terminal with an S
video cable. If it does not have an S video output terminal, connect
its video output terminal to the VIDEO 3 (or 4) IN terminal using an
RCA-type video connection cable. You do not need to connect to
both the S VIDEO 3 (or 4) IN and VIDEO 3 (or 4) IN terminals. If
the satellite tuner or television has component video outputs,
connect them to one of the COMPONENT VIDEO INPUT jacks.
With the initial settings of the TX-DS898, the VIDEO 3 and
VIDEO 4 input sources are set for the COMPONENT VIDEO
INPUT 2 jack.
If the video connection is made at COMPONENT VIDEO INPUT
1, this must be changed at the Setup menu: Input Setup → Video
Setup → Component Video (see page 35).
Using an RCA-type audio connection cable, connect the audio
output terminal on the satellite tuner or television to the same
VIDEO 3 (or 4) IN audio jacks on the TX-DS898. Make sure that
you properly connect the left channel to the L jack and the right
channel to the R jack.
If the device has a digital output jack as well, be sure to also connect
it to either a DIGITAL INPUT (COAXIAL) or DIGITAL INPUT
(OPTICAL) jack on the TX-DS898 depending on the device.
With the initial settings of the TX-DS898, the VIDEO 3 input source
is set for digital input at the OPTICAL 3 jack, and the VIDEO 4
input source is set for digital input at the OPTICAL 4 jack.
If the digital connection is made at a different jack, this must be changed
at the Setup menu: Input Setup → Digital Setup (see page 33).

No sound is coming through my Onkyo receiver from the cable box

The Playstation 3 automatically broadcasts video and audio through HDMI even when an optical audio cable is ran to the receiver. If your TV has an optical audio out, it's just best to run everything into the TV including audio, and then run the optical cable from the TV to the reciever. It's less confusing and less buttons/remotes you have to use when you want to change devices, i.e. Cable/PS3/DVD

Video disappears within 30 seconds

Hi Mark

I am going to take a stab in the dark here...

Did you plug the hdmi from the receiver to hdmi via the monitor hdmi output? this is needed so when you change the device on the receiver ie. between setop box and dvd the monitor changes with it accordingly.

You may also need to go to the setop box to set it to use hdmi output at the right frequencies too..ie. 720p 1080i or 1080p.Also set it so it only sends the picture via hdmi but audio still with optical out.

good luck
