Did you installed or updated anything lately? Which OS are you using? Vista, XP, etc? anyhow go to your device manager and delete your USB drivers and shutdown your computer and start again and that will allow your computer to read again and install all the drivers that you need only. Just in the event that did not work make a copy of your old driver and keep it on folder that you know to get to it. let me know if that work and please remmber to rate my service so I am able to contenue provide quality service and improve on it with your help. God bless

Verify that the USB port is working, you may also try it on another machine to see if it works, you may have a corrupt driver for your usb port. If it works on another machine then uninstall and reinstall updated drivers for your usb ports. I hope this helps, Good luck.

Longer Recognize on compuer?

The likelyhood here is that you have lost your USB ports. Plug another device into the same port. If it works ok, then suspect your connecting cable. If this is without success, try plugging the dive into another computer. If no good either, take your drive to a data recovery shop. They may be able to rescue your data using their special applications.

You better check with the Seagate people. This seems to be a problem with the casing. And since you're under warranty, you can get a replacement.

Maxtor III 500 GB external hard drive is no longer recognized by computer. No driver installed ???

Drivers are not necessary for hard drives - as long as your computer recognized it when you first installed it, you're all set. It sounds like your hard drive has failed, or become disconnected. Check the connections for IDE or SATA, and power. If they're both connected properly, listen when you power up the computer to hear if that particular hard drive spins up. If it doesn't, it might be dead.
If you have access to another computer, try installing the drive into it temporarily and see if it is recognized in that computer. If the drive has failed, you might be able to get it replaced by Maxtor if it's still under warranty. Unfortunately they will not recover any data on the drive for you; you must pay a data recovery specialist to recover any data on the drive, and this is expensive, so only do this if it's extremely important data.
