Question about Apple iPod nano

I am trying to download just a couple of pieces of music from someone's ipod onto my computer without transferring everything from my computer onto her ipod and messing it up for her. How do I do that?

Thanks so much. I was able to get the files but then when I played the ipod on my docking station the ipod just died. Yes....just died. It looked like it got a shock. The light is on but the songs are all gone. It was working last night after I got the files on a different docking station but this morning not so much. Could it have anything to do with the downloading or the fact that the docking station was too much for the itty bitty ipod. I normally use a nano on the station and this is a ipod 4 gb.

  1. Have the "View Hidden Files and Folders" option enabled. To view them go to my documents and then tools>folder options>view. Then click the "Show hidden files and folders" under the "Hidden files and folders" section. (You will not have to scroll down the list to see it)
  2. Plug the iPod into the computer that you wish to back it up on.
  3. Open up a Windows Explorer Window, from the accessories folder of the programs listing.
  4. Navigate to the "My Computer" icon.
  5. Expand the folder, and find the drive that has the name of your iPod.
  6. Expand your iPod's folder, and find the folder: "iPod Control".
  7. Expand "iPod Control" and find the folder "Music".
  8. Look for a series of folders with strange names.
  9. Select all of the files. Do this by going to: Edit>Select All>. Alternatively, you may hold the Control key and click all of the folders.
  10. Copy all of the folders, by going to Edit>Copy or by right clicking one of the selected folders and clicking copy. This will copy all of the folders.
  11. Paste the music in the desired folder by using Edit>Paste.
  12. Open each folder, and copy the MP3 files into the desired folder, or you can leave them where they are. The music will have non understandable names, like "EDCI" and "DLXE", 4 letter names are normal.
  13. Open the music up in the music player of your choice if you wish. Do this when all of the music has been extracted from the original iPod folders.
  • TIPS
  • Most music player programs can decode the names into the original names, and artists.
  • This works on both PCs and Macs, but these instructions are for PCs. Mac computers work similarly to this.
  • The copying of the music takes some time.
  • This can be used to copy friend's music.
  • Get a good MP3-Tagger-Program e.g. mp3tag (freeware) and automatically rename the files if you want to use them on your PC
  • WARNING
  • Do not try and manually rename each song.
  • Do NOT mess around with any other file(s) on the iPod
  • Do not remove any songs from the list

For Apple iPods that are still running their original firmware (not jailbroken) the best and safest way to transfer music and other files onto the device is to use iTunes. You can download iTunes and any tutorials on adding music to your iPod through iTunes at Apple's website. Hope this helps!

I will try and make this as short as possible and hope you understand what I am asking. I just got an Ipod Classic last month and signed up with Itunes and then downloaded about 1300 songs from my cd...

You can't "backwards sync" (put music from your iPod back onto your computer) through iTunes. When you went to sync after you got your fixed computer back, I'm assuming iTunes tried to copy what was in iTunes (nothing) to your iPod, which probably is what caused these problems.

Assuming you still have the music on your iPod, I would recommend transferring the music from your iPod back to your computer (to a folder other than iTunes), restoring your iPod to factory settings, then moving all of the music files into iTunes and re-syncing your iPod.

There are two programs that are available to transfer songs from your iPod back onto your computer. The first is iDump and the second is YamiPod. I have found that iDump is the better of the two.
The link for iDump is:

Hope this helps!

My apple iPod will not show up on itunes and i can't turn it on HELP!!!!

Sorry if I'm too obvious, but are you using iTunes?

Yes? Then check your iPod settings on iTunes:
If you want to just drag songs to the iPod you have to set it to "manually manage music" on the iPod "Summary" screen.
Otherwise you need to create playlists in iTunes and synchronise your iPod to those playlists (tick them in the "Music" tab.

Of course, if you already knew all this, sorry! Maybe you have a usb port problem (try restarting computer) or an iPod problem (try resetting your iPod). NOTE: with iPods, you MUST use iTunes to transfer music to iPod, and it is NOT possible to transfer music FROM you ipod TO your computer (say you've loaded songs from someone elses computer to your iPod and you want to put them onto your computer - no can do! Use a flash drive).

Ipod shown in recovery mode when plugged into new itunes version

Each iPod usually only syncs up to 1 computer. try downloading a program called idump. It allows you to take all of your music and files off the ipod and onto the computer, without having to restore. Then you'll have to restore the ipod, and put all the songs back onto it.
