I was gifted a used Xbox 360 a year ago and let it sit for awhile because it did not come with any cords. 2 or 3 months ago I bought the cords and recently got an HDD so I could finally play games (it had no memory with it, either). However, now it will not play any games (original or 360) but plays DVDs just fine. Is this a common problem, and is it easy to fix? Original Xbox games it tells me the disc could not be read, and Xbox 360 games it will say "Please insert game into an Xbox 360 console." Before I got the hard drive all it was telling me was that I couldn't play any games until I got a memory unit, so I got one and this. :(

Are you using copied CD's of Xbox games, Original Xbox 360 would read such copied game discs as normal DVD's and would show a message as "Play DVD"
To play such games it requires the Xbox 360 DVD drive to be flashed, which is called as a Softmod, if you do so you would be banned for playing on Xbox Live and such act is prohibited since it accounts to game piracy
Try using different sorts of discs in the xbox, original xbox games, xbox 360 games, dvds, etc, and if nothing reads in the unit, you need to replace the laser assembly. But seeing how the unit is less than a year old, take it back to retailer or send to microsoft. Good Luck.
The Xbox 360 is known for this. I would contact Microsoft as soon as possible.

best thing to do is send it back in to microsoft, if you open the xbox 360 case you will void the warranty, and they wont bother helping you. If you have already voided the warranty, you can find xbox 360 dvd drives on ebay or craigslist for around 30$ USD. Only the drive alone, not a whole xbox
I am almost 100% certain that the warranties of xbox 360 consoles have been extended 3 years.
I also had this problem some months ago, and Im sorry to say that I was told the problem is in the hardware. I had to send my xbox in, and they sent me a brand new one, fully covered under warranty.
Give xbox a call... 1-800-4MY-XBOX, ask about the warranty of your system, and also let them know your problem. The only way I ever got any games to work with this problem, was to open and close the tray over and over until it finally worked, so I finally just sent it in. Good luck.
