Your tub seal may be leaking water into the transmission causing the oil level to rise.

Oil leak 2000 alero, just replaced plug, not it, leaked out all the oil after I drove it 20 miles, please help, could it be a gasket or what

Check the oil filter. The old gasket might be stuck on the engine (two gaskets stuck together), or the new gasket might be defective, misaligned or missing.

I have a Maytag Atlantis top load machine. It is 7 years old. I have very dark oil dripping from under the machine at the bottom edge of the front. I am assuming the gear box is gone but wanted to confirm...

Sorry to confirm your suspisions but its leaking oil from the transmission and its exxxpensive to replace the transmission. And sad but true the good ole days of dependabilty of the maytag is gone espically since 5 years ago Maytag was bought by Whirlpool. a Whirlpool is a good machine but nothing was good as the old Maytag's

Kenmore series 70 makes high pitch noise in spin cycle noticed a little oil leaking from gear box so pretty sure thats the problem. Washer is about 8 years old is it worth fixing or scrap it?

If this is a Kenmore top loader, a leaking gearcase may/may not indicate problems. Although, a leaking gearcase usually is a precursor to one that's beginning to fail, some will continue to run for quite some time before they do. Oil does expand in the gearcase and can leak without being an indication of a problem.

If the leak is minor in nature, it may be worth watching for a while and get some more use out of the machine. I would clean the area under the washer thoroughly and place some cardbaord down, so you can monitor the leak.

If the leak is significant, the seal is probably shot and it may time to replace it now. You will generally see a spary pattern of oil all over the interior washr case and significant puddling if the leak is bad. The process of replacing the gearcase is not that difficult. If you are interested in pursuing this repair on your own, the average cost is about $150 for a replacement. You can order on line at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repirclinic.com

Prices vary between these sites, so shop and compare. Ordering on line can save you from retail mark up on the price.

The following link explains step-by-step how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3576575-replacing_a_gearcase_on_whirlpool_manufa

Its a lengthy read, but its really a simple process if you follow the steps provided. I would recommend replacing the motor coupling as well since you will be taking the old one apart. The part number is 285753A with an average cost of about $15.

So...the choice is yours. If the machine is in otherwise good condition a $150 repair would be well worth it. Most new washers cost $500 to $1500 depending on model and features. These Kenmore top loaders are manufactured by Whirlpool. I have worked on some that are well over twenty years old. They are fairly reliable, easy to work on and the replacement parts usually aren't too expensive.

I'm not trying to sell you on the idea of keeping it. I just wanted you to have some reason to weigh the options. I hope this gives you enough information to think about.

Gearcase is leaking oil

What brand??? Whirlpool ,kenmores leak through the front shaft by coulpling. It will still run with low oil, it may get oil on clutch wich can make it slow spin.
Ge's old and new leak oil and can run for a long time with no oil. They will get loud and scize up after awile. Old maytags leak and keep on running. New ones drop dead.
Run yours till it dies, replace the trans with a new one or buy a new washer. There is no fix for any leaks, just replace transmission or washer.

My Whirlpool washer is leaking oil out of the bottom and onto the floor. Model# LHA5500WI. How can I fix this problem? It has a 1/2 hp motor, 1725 rpm, 1440 rpm, rubber mounted.

The leak would be from the gear box. The seals on the gearbox are worn out.

Best to get technician to remove gearbox, and have it reconditioned.

Machine is usually very noisy ( like it was out of balance, but isnt) 90 percent time very noisy in the final expell of water, also some oil on the floor under center of machine ? this is a top load...

oil on the floor means your gear box is leaking
if it has been leaking. if it has been leaking for a while, it may have done major damage, and would be cheeper to replace the machine second hand than to fix.
if noise is happening while you are pumping , it may have a bra under wire or small coin in the water pump.
if it is sounding like it is out of balance it may have a support or spring broken or unhooked
as the tub is usually suspended by springs

Oil leaking from gear box on whirpool washer, theres no play inthe shaft,i just replaced the coupler, and 9 load later a puttle of oil was under the washer

The seals on the gearcase (transmission) are defective. Check with your manual, the gearcase usually has a 10 year warranty.
If it's older than 1 year be prepared to pay for labor.

My washer is leaking grease or oil on the floor under the machine

Hello and welcome

You said, My GE washer is leaking a tan colored oil underneath the unit. I suspect it's the gear case leaking. How difficult is it to replace the gasket or seal. I like to fix things and have tools. If the gear oil is leaking this usually means the transmission is shot and on it's way out. It is not cost efficient to have it replaced. 99.9 % of the time you throw it out and buy a new washer.
For the cost of the Transmission and the labor.
you can buy a new washer.
How old is the washer ?

Here is an interesting report I just read!!!!!!!!!!

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old washer

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your washer,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your washer is under warranty or less than four years old ,
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that washers under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your washer is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new washer.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive washer
eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of washers you replace are likely to end up in a landfill.

Oil on floor underneath washer

jeffnew The oil which you see on the floor is coming from the gear case. The gear case is not repairable and it has to be replaced. If your washer is less than 1 year old do not wait and call Whirlpool - it is under full warranty. If your washer is between 1 to 5 years old, then the part is still under limited manufacturer warranty but you are liable for any trip and labor charges. It could be much over $200.00. If you are handy and willing to save money, you can buy the part for less than $150.00 and replace it yourself. In that case, I can find the best deal for you and help you with step by step instructions. Gendos...post back
