Your heatsink clip broke off, so now the heat can't be effectively removed from the cpu. This will cause the cpu to "thermtrip", meaning the computer will cut itself off automatically to prevent damage to the cpu due to overheating. Unfortunately, you may have to replace the motherboard because of that broken part. I suggest Ebay...

It's probably the cpu overheating because of the broken clip. You'll need to buy a new heatsink for the cpu (get some thermal paste at the same time). Take the old one off, clean the compound off the top of the cpu. Put a pea-size blob of thermal paste on the cpu and attach the new heatsink.

It states cpu fan not on

Hope you can open the CPU and check the CPU fan. Try unplugging the fan power cable on motherboard and inseting again.
If it doesnt solve it, take out the fan (attached to the top of heat sink. Dont take out heat sink) and try with a battery of some 6 volt. Red +ve Black -ve. If it doesnt run, you need to replace that fan.

I have a dell dimension 2400. My starts up fine

Most likely a motherboard issue.

Also ensure the CPU Heatsink is firmly attached. If the heatsink is loose, replace the plastic heatsink retainer

If it is secure, then the motherboard is the most likely failure point

I took out the processor an i'm waiting for another one

Go to a computer-store and buy some "CPU heat paste". You'll need to cover the top of the new CPU with this heat-conducting paste, so that the CPU-generated heat will migratesto the radiator, and the fan on top of the radiator will dissipate the heat.

Alert chipset heat sink not detected system halted error message

It is NOT the CPU fan! There is a heatsink over the northbridge chipset adjacent to the CPU. The clip that supplies pressure to maintain contact between the northbridge and the heatsink has detached on one or both ends. There are wire loops at each end of the clip which feed into the motherboard. When the clip detaches (solder failure), it pops the loop out of the motherboard. The BIOS recognizes this condition as a heatsink failure, hence the error message.

My CPU fan for my Dell Dimension 2350 has stopped turning!

Hello,

If your fan is not turning at all then it is probably dead, the bearings are likely clogged with dust and such. The PC is shutting off because of heat buildup on the processor chip. You need to do an Ebay search for your model and order a fan right away. Continued running of your sysem without a fan will kill the processor and motherboard. You should be able to get a replacement fan for your computer for less than $15 including shipping. Your local computer store may have one to fit your system but they may charge more for it. To change the fan is very easy, the left side of the case will come off your system, right under the power supply is the processor and heatsink and the fan. Disconnect the old fan and reconnect the new unit.

I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution

I'd seize the opportunity to get a new cheap cooler, as it can also extend the life of the PC.

If not you're in for either some DIY soldering or asking Dell for another clip.

Hi, maybe he was over heating, open your tower and look the fan of your CPU and POWER SUPPLY. Did they work? If yes, did the dirt on the heatsink of the cpu hide the heatsink? If yes clean it and make a test!

Dell dimension 4700 video card upgrade problem

Be careful with this computer. The cooling system works by blowing air INTO the machine over the cpu then the heat slowly comes out of the holes on the side panel (on the left side of the machine). One reason the text may be blurry is because the video card is heating up too much. This problem is specific to this machine. Most computers have the cooling fan blowing the heat out of the case and not sucking air into the case. On the plus side at least this PC is near silent right? I would know since I own this machine. Amazingly silent it is.
