This should come with power adapter to power up the hard drive. Make sure that the USB drivers all completely installed on your windows.

Please refer on your device manager. If there is any ? on the list of device manager, right click and uninstall. Unplug all USB devices except for mouse and keyboard if its USB. Restart the computer and login to windows then plug the External Hard Drive. There should be a power adapter came with it. On some External Hard Drive, there is a software came with it, but mostly those are for backups.

Please plug the External hard drive at the main USB port at the back of the Computer.

Let me know if its still doing the same thing...

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section

It wont load windows xp even with the recovery disc it just keeps saying boot with any key

You may have set the boot priority in the CMOS. If so, enter the CMOS setup and set the priority to "boot from HDD" This may not fix your problem, but it is a start. If it still wants to boot from another source, the HDD master boot record (MBR) is corrupt, or the HDD has failed.

Cannot boot from Momentus Ultra ATA 160 GN HDD

it can only clone the windows files and folders there is other files located on a hidden system on the hard drive, when you install and new hard drive these file are fixed to the drive. to make a bootable drive you need to install these files from a windows disc then add clone files over the top so these files don't get deleted.

I have just replaced my hard drive in my compaq f500 and need to reinstall vista as my operating software but my dvd drive is also not working.. my usb connections are not picking up a usb hard drive.......

That us strange because Windows comes preloaded with the dc/dvd drivers for installing its systems with new hardware regardless of what it is. Make sure nothing else is plugged in except the dc drive. take out any other peripherals that aren't needed in the insta;; and try again. Watch close for the "boot from cd, hit any key" masseage, it doesn't last long. Make sure your hard drive was initialized by the software that came with it. If you didn't do that, windows will have no target to load the files into and may not start. Make sure to boot the computer off the enclosed driver disc that came with the hard drive and run its setup program, this initializes the disc for a first time setup and sets itself up to be the master boot record device for your operating system.

How i can format my laptop toshiba L300D can anyone tell me how to do it plz

If you have the windows install disk, just put it in and start a new install..there will be an option come up in the installation to format the drive.
If your laptop has a second hard drive listed that is very small that the recovery partition...go to it and run the recovery program

Software disc

You need your original installation disc(s), or start up the machine and hold down the f8 key and then, 1st boot on the last known good.
2nd, reboot holding down the f8 key and then try the restore method. Most machines have a 4 to 10 gig partitioned on the C drive which holds your restore partition. Else, if you have the orginal OS disc, put it in your cd reader, it will come up with the start up screen for installation. when you get to the install window say OK, then when the window comes up you should have a choice of intalling new or repairing the hard drive ... repair the hard is the correct choice. This should work if there isn't a hard drive problem, or your hit with a virus, or that the hard drive has a bad boot mbr.

Laptop screen wont work.

Assuming you don't have 2 drives installed in your laptop then you will need to get a windows system disk or install disk and boot up with this in the laptop to load windows whatever into your hard drive and set your laptop up to run on the new drive. Here is Microsoft's tutorial on how to install and set up windows:http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/default.mspx
Hope this helps you.

Expand Partition of Hard Drive

My advice is start fresh with a new hard drive, install XP on it, then use partitioning software while running XP to create an NTFS partition on the remaining space of your old hard drive if you must keep your FAT32 partition.

An alternate method would be go to the manufacturer of your hard drive and download their partitioning software. Often it will run from a floppy or boot cd and you can partition as you like using it. Keep in mind, repartitioning a drive, especially an older one, has a bad habit of making the old existing data unreadable if you're not experienced so make sure you have a back up.

How long ago did you purchase your computer? If your within the return policy i'd return it right away. It appears that you have a bad Hard Drive.

If your outsitde the return policy, you'll have to purchase a new hard drive and get it installed or contact HP and send out your unit to get repaired.

If you purchased a PSP with your laptop, Geek Squad will take care of it all for you.

2nd HDD installed as slave but still unloaded with software

Simple, if your hardware is working all OK do this:
AND DO THIS CUZ WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION lacks of the needed administrative tools.

Go to the net and find PARTITION MAGIG or PARTITION MANAGER... download the windows version of any of those and partition the HD with them.

REMEMBER:

1. PARTITION MUST BE LOGICAL, NOT PRIMARY
2. PARTITION MUST BE NTFS (Windows XP version) that you will see in Partition Magic options...
3. If you format from Windows, disk must be intitialized as BASIC type.

if you do this and you suceed the HD will work, if not, it has a problem, either logical or physic.

Good Luck
